Reserve grade, development and expansion all in one!

I've read something on another thread about the NRL using feeder teams for their reserves and juniors and it got me thinking about how we could do something similar.

What if there was a development league just below league one for any aspiring professional clubs to establish themselves before they make the step up. Clubs/consortiums/individuals could apply to join this league and the successful clubs could then be partnered with SL teams who could use these teams to play any players who don't make the 17 and as a step up for Academy players. The rest of the team could be made up of locals who come through the system.

The money saved from running a reserve team could be used to help with development in the area and the SL team could also help out with coaching etc.

There is currently a development league, it's called league 1. They have dual registration to allow them to partner with more established clubs and to save those clubs money on reserves. Typically their squads contain a few locals.

You have described something that already exists.

I think it's a great idea. Nottingham could be a feeder team for the Bears

Not exactly. League 1 is part of the pyramid and some teams are spending big to get promoted and others are using dual reg and others aren't. Some of the outpost teams are struggling for players and don't have much junior activity. This makes for an uneven league.

My suggestion is a league for new clubs or any existing clubs who are struggling in league 1 without anyone spending big for promotion. All clubs would have dual reg and could build as a club from the bottom up with the help of a SL club. They could then apply for league 1 when ready or just continue as they are.

This would give all SL clubs the opportunity to play all their squad players as well as aiding expansion

At the sort of level you're talking about, Super League fringe players would destroy teams. Also, the split in L1 that happens now where bottom 7/8 go into a mini league sort of gives what you describe. The bottom half of L1 is basically expansion teams who fight it out to be tallest dwarf! Standard is pretty low evidenced by Challenge Cup results where they face amateurs and lose.

No, we've tried that. None of the teams outside of League 1 in the Midlands and South are worth playing. The standard is too low.

Yes I remember those times well. With such a low standard i'd have thought you'd have beaten those teams more often!

Oops I've touched a nerve.

No nerve touched, just not sure what you want to achieve here. It has nothing to do with the thread. Set up a Notts and Cov thread if you like, we can discuss until your hearts content on there.

Quite right but from small acorns. We are talking about a number of teams developing from amateur status into semi-pro without a wedge of Sky cash to set up and run all the structures in areas with little if no previous professional RL to build on. Opportunistic (Mansfield) club set ups with no under structure excepted which started but never supported the growth. I don't see any northern teams doing much to help them develop unless it's an opportunity for plunder. Oh but how we laughed at teams on the fringe in distant areas such as Highfeild or Scarborough and even Town when they didn't perform in the CC.

Success consists of going from failure to failure without loss of enthusiasm.

.

They wouldn't because all teams would have SL fringe players.

There would still be a disparity between those players and local ones and it would be significant.

I think your suggestion would work better if the SL club provided resources other than playing resource to help grow the 'club'. And from an RFL perspective the support they could give would be rather than central grants they could fund development officers to build conveyor belt over time and support community engagement.

See my original tongue in cheek comment #4.

It was just a bit of light hearted banter at the expense of a club ( and people) that I have a lot of time for.

But you took the bait. These forums are supposed to be fun.

Without wishing to stoke the fire, how are the Outlaws doing these days? Have they still got a strong team and juniors? Much development work going on? Do they have their own ground? Always had a soft spot for them, having played them a few times and hope they can make the step up in years to come

Joe Shep - frequenter of these forums would be better placed to answer that. But still going strong with a player base that is pretty much entirely Nottingham based. Lost yesterday in CLS semi final down in London having won the competition last year. Still have juniors in place. Great club still trying hard to secure an RL owned permanent facility (Project 30). What was your club?

Played Nottingham home and away this year and they have lots to be proud of as a club. Such a shame CLS is set for the scrapheap and just when the sport has created a real incubation division for promotion and relegation to and from League 1. CLS needs:

★ 3 new teams.

★ A sponsor.

★ touch judges.

★ imposition of match day standards/requirements.

Playing in CLS this season has been a real step forward for us. A side packed with 16 - 18 year olds and with a number playing 1st XIII and winning 2017 contracts.
