Celtic Rooster
Does anybody know what is happening with the Charity Shield this season? By my calculations it should be Siddal .v. Rochdale Mayfield. Has it been scrapped or will it be decided, like last season, by the aggregate score of the two league games between these clubs? On another note - how sad to see that only 19 clubs entered the NCL challenge trophy this season.
Mr Smeaton
If my memory is right I think a similar number entered last year. A sign of the times the game is facing.
Celtic Rooster
31 entered last year Mr Smeaton. It really gets me down seeing the cup competitions being diluted like this and I really fear for the game. Look at the BARLA National cup - a once very prestigious competition, and the Lancashire cup has not been played for years now. I played for a pub team in the 80's and we entered everything. The more games the better and it was great to come up against a team from a different league. Attitudes have changed and money has a lot to do with it. The NCL team I have been involved with for the last 18 years don't enter any cup competitions any more as there is not much chance of winning them and a extra long away trip, if the draw was unkind, could put the club in trouble financially. Also, the playing squad is nowhere near the size it was when the game was thriving and we can't afford to risk any more injuries than we have to.
