Referring standards

Recommended Posts

Can honestly say that the standard of refereeing is worse than ever. From super league down it is getting worse. A game in watched today was ruined by the performance of the officials. The ones I witnessed today were totally inept and seemed to be influenced by the closeness of the conversations with one sides coach.

They take their lead from the top - No personality- no common sense - just extensions of the law book. It would help if they looked like they were there to enjoy themselves rather than treat it as a job. In my experience they need to socialise more after games, although I don't mean go into club houses to be abused.

Maybe if the rugby lge up the refs fee considerably they just might attract more people willing to do the job,and then they could be more selective .Its a thankless job at the best of times. Some of the refs would have retired long ago but no one to take there place but they carry on both Saturday and sometimes doubling up for youth games on Sunday for very small match fees.It would be interesting to know what the fee for football refs at the equivalent leval to NCL receive.

What has the fee got to do with the standard, To much influence from the top and we never pay less than £40.00 these days and to be truthful we've only had a couple that's been worth their fee, probably the best I saw in 24 years of playing and the last 17 watching actually posts on here, he was always well turned out, looked and was fit, and had great knowledge of the game and I never ever saw him once wanting to be the centre of attention, in fact he only ever got one decision wrong and that was when he disallowed my try against Cas Panthers.

Carlsberg don't do Soldiers, but if they did, they would probably be Brits.

Is the £40 plus before tax or is it taxable.Last season we played up at Gateshead the ref had travelled over from Whitehaven how many miles there and back and how much time spent on the road . What kind of match fee would he receive .By the way I have spoke to the ref you refer to in your post and he says your in denial about that there try as you had a bang on the head early on in the game .

I like to talk to referees after games and I like to ask them about incidents I might not agree with, and sometimes their explanation can make me change my mind, but unfortunately, more often than not, by the time I have finished completing match reports they have gone home. I love it when I am able to praise a referee in a match report. I remember sending a report in one time and we have to name a man of the match for both sides. I did this, but I also mentioned that the best performance on the pitch that day came from the referee. My biggest "beef" is with the touch judges. They are rarely any use to the referee and straight at after the game they are stood at the bar with their hand out waiting for their £12.50 each (£25 - that's 5 of our players' match day subs) and, as soon as they get it, more often than not they are off. When they are particularly bad our secretary pays them by cheque. Their faces are a picture!

Now't inside to bang, that's probably why I never suffered concussion and you'd best ask a ref if they declare their match fee, I may be wrong or out dated but didn't the RFL pick up the tab for referee's travelling over a set distance ?

If it is an RFL appointment then the match fee is taxed at source. Mileage is reimbursement so expenses

If paid by the club as at most amateur matches then it should be declared on your tax return

In over 10 years of refereeing and touch judging I only left straight after the game on 2 occasions. One was for a family event that evening and the other was when the match was abandoned after 9 minutes & 36 seconds.

We were encouraged to always stay after matches and whilst it could be daunting for a youngster walking into a bar after a "controversial" match you earn respect the next time you referee those sides. You also get to build up some good friendships and have a laugh. Just don't try defending the indefensible and try to avoid the bloke in the corner who claims to know everything but didn't even watch the match

Best 2 referees have seen this season did Milford and underbank and East Leeds v Leigh East. Not sure of names but men who controlled the games and spoke to players on there level. Too many young refs out there at the moment who think they are in super league.

I overheard one touch judge at Normanton a few seasons ago say to the other tj,you get the food and I will get the money. They were only about 16 year old so a good pickup for a couple of hours work and a free tea thrown in..

I also like to talk to match officials before and after games ,I have mellowed with time and try to see there view of the game which is one of neutrality and all in all they have a very demanding job,its very easy to criticise especially when things are going against your team. One of the the best refs ive seen  was a   ginger haired lad from Leeds who refereed us last season. He was a credit to the game, spoke well and controlled the match all through .Cant recall his name .

I played in the Milford v Underbank game and agree he did a good job. He's a Welsh bloke and I was told he refereed Union professionally until quite recently - not sure how much truth there is in it though! Either way, he controlled a very physical game, very well.

The Welsh lad is Jamie Jones from Bridgend. He always talks to the players and always stays for a good while after the game, and is very approachable. He enjoys the games and that reflects in his performances. I have spoke to people who don't rate him, but I do - highly. He took charge of the Featherstone Lions .v. Mayfield semi-final last season, which I watched as a neutral. It was a very emotional day for the Mayfield club due to some very sad circumstances but I thought he handled it well. He officiated the friendlies between North Wales and South Wales at the start of this season. He was a Rugby Union referee. I think the referee who I once named as man of the match was John Farrell from Widnes. Widnes seems to produce decent referee's.

Thats him, doesn't surprise me he did well in the other code. Other one was Bulmer.

Although any travel costs you incur can be offset against it at 45p per mile?

I didn't do many non-RFL Open Age games and I never charged at all for most of my junior games. Then again, you get what you pay for!!

Very good ref Jamie. We've had him 2-3 times and he always stays for a drink. He speaks to the lads on their level rather than thinking he's above them as a lot of the officials seem to.

We had him once last season and he travelled all the way to Shaw Cross from Bridgend, then travelled back after the game to take the Mrs out for her birthday before running the line the following day at Dewsbury, which is 300 yards from our club. Some commitment that!

I've found that a lot of referees have started arguing with the players when  they appeal a decision, which in my opinion is a terrible trait.

Probably safer than staying in Dewsbury ;)

Don't argue with the players just take them back 10 metres. They will get the message

I went to watch warriors Vs Dewsbury moor today, warriors won, the referee was abysmal there must have been 50/60 penalties in the match, mainly committed by Dewsbury moor, the official was equally poor for both teams. The referee couldn't keep up with pace and couldn't be consistent in the decision's they kept. I ended up stood next to the assessor, who I think was a super league ref(Thaler)I think. He thought the referee was brilliant etc, as a fan  I couldn't have had a more opposite opinion. I'm sure the players on both teams felt the same way, no doubt the official will be refereeing pro soon.

I also went to this game and agree with most of your comments. The referee was a South African lady now living in South Wales who has refereed pro rugby union in both countries. What I cant get my head round is with only three games in the NCL yesterday why appoint a referee who as a nine hour round trip car journey. Finally the official assessor I spoke to after the game thought she handle the game well speaking to the players and explaining her decisions to them.
