Don't blame BARLA - they have not done anything different to what they have always done with the BARLA National cup. Blame the clubs for not wanting to enter, either because "We are not entering as we have no chance of winning" or "We are not entering because if we get an away trip to London the coach fare would cripple the club". The National cup peaked in the mid 80's but then attitudes started to change and the "little" teams no longer saw it as a adventure. Once the NCL clubs were more or less banned from entering by the NCL the decline was truly under way.

Hence lies the problem! The vast majority of the amateur game now plays summer rugby, so having preliminary or 1st round games a few weeks after most teams have just finished a gruelling season is ridiculous.

I do take your point regarding the NCL, however if the competition was available to all the regional teams , and made the trophy worth winning again, maybe the conference teams would think again, a glorified Yorkshire cup wont entice any change.

Regards traveling costs etc, think outside the box regionalise the first few rounds.

I went to watch Queens play Orrell St James (Lancashire team in glorified Yorkshire Cup!) in Leeds and it was a good game.  I think the criticism of BARLA is a bit unfair here as it is up to teams to enter and the RFL has seemingly 'advised' NCL clubs not to enter so only a handful of these better amateur teams break rank.  BARLA put the round dates on during dead weekends in the NCL, but the majority of NCL teams have not wished to participate.  That is not BARLA's decision.

It is BARLA decision to run this competition when most teams are in off season or just starting pre season.

While we are on the topic of BARLA , they have overseen the demise of the National cup, County Championship , District competitions , however the biggest failure is in the selection of players selected to play for GB etc, what once was the ultimate honer , only achieved by the very best of amateur talent, is now run on a " who you know " criteria.
