Beer and Pubs

Recommended Posts

I know there is already a food and drink thread, but I prefer to be a little more specialised! A couple of topics to start:

  1. Made the annual trip up to York for Skolars' game this weekend and stayed near Midklegate on the Saturday night. Visited the York Brewery whose beers I always enjoy, the Falcon Tap, Brigantes and the wonderful York Tap at the railway station. While not always caring for them, the Spoons by Micklegate has always struck me as having a good and interesting range as well. There are a number of other pubs in that area which I've not visited, but I wonder if there is anywhere else with so many top drinking holes in such a small area?
  2. I noticed on both the York Tap and Falcon Tap that there were beers on offer described as table beers. I think I drank table beers on occasion when I lived Holland 25 years ago, but my recollection was that they were brown ales. I have always thought something like the ghastly Pelforth was that way inclined too, but possibly just because I could never consider it as a beer to be drunk in public. The table beers at the weekend were quite blonde and about 3.8%. Is this perhaps the craft beer/microbrewery fad of the year?

If ever you venture to our fair city, I strongly recommend you pop in here.

If you mention Ullman, RoyBoy and my good self, he'll probably charge you double.

York is one of the best cities in the North for the range of ale and good pubs though quite expensive. We were in Hull, Bridlington, Driffield and Beverley this weekend and had some great beer in good pubs. A pity we didn t enjoy the Wigan result so much!

Not been there in a while but my favourite pub is The Fox n Hound in Bramhope ..Yorkshire.  Got my two favourite things on one plate roast pork served in a giant Yorkshire pud with lashings of gravy n served with chips. Washed down with Black sheep beer...couldn't ask for a better meal . :)

York is pretty good but I've yet to find a city to beat Liverpool when it comes to pubs and real ale. You can go on a pub crawl in the city centre for 3 or 4 days without repetition.

I can't help with your requests Jeff, I can second the quality of York Brewery beers though. Yorkshire Terrier being my favourite. I have recently found bottled versions in Morrisons and is a good substitute for the draught version.

We did the tour at York Brewery last year. Sometimes brewery tours can be rather dry (not literally) experiences, but the guy doing it there was thoroughly entertaining. Really passionate. The bar at the brewery is thoroughly pleasant and as yet not had a beer there I didn't like.

Looks good, but suspect it may be a few decades before Skolars are in the same league as one of the Hull teams!

Had a good experience in the York Spoons on Sunday, but much much less so in the Stowmarket Spoons tonight on my way home from work. I do find they really vary with the range and quality of their beers now. Five pumps out of action and only Ruddles "Best", Abbot and Marstons Imperial IPA on. I had the latter as the only beer on pump not produced by Greed Thing, but it was pretty rank.

Wandered up to the other pub in the High Street, The Oak, which I had never visited before. Interesting experience. Very spit and sawdust and the clientele seemed to have just popped in from filming the sequel to Straw Dogs yet they had African music playing on the Jukebox throughout the time I was there. The quality ambience was, however, ruined by a rugby union documentary being shown on the TVs in the pub (apparently the All Blacks are the greatest sporting team of all time ever or someat).

Terrier is a popular beer in Huddersfield. No doubt it has gone well in the past week.

My favourite pub in Hastings, isn't in Hastings.

Pedantic corner here. It's actually The North Star just off Bohemia Rd, in St. Leonards-on-Sea. Just around the corner from me. It won Sussex CAMRA 2016 Pub of the year.

You can find good beer pretty much anywhere these days without too much effort. My favoutires at present:

Huddersfield:

Some great traditional pubs such as the Rat and Ratchet, The Star and The Sportsman

A couple of relatively new but great places The Grove and The Mallinsons tap

plus one of the best of the new generation craft brewers Magic Rock and their brilliant tap.

Manchester: Too many places to list but a great increase in new bars and breweries in the last few years.

Leeds: Has always been a good city centre but has had some brilliant new bars added over the last few years.

Even my little town of New Mills in Derbyshire now has a cracking little micro pub serving an ever changing 3 cask and 4-5 keg beers plus a well stocked fridge full of bottles.

Halifax is getting in on the act with the Pump Room and Grayston Unity - like sitting in your front room with a nice pint.

They just need a TV to show Rugby League and they have nailed it

Finding room for the widescreen telly might be a challenge. Good places for a pint though.

The Skolars Supporters Group met at the Bree Louise on Wednesday. For any one coming to London via Euston station, it is worth a gander, albeit it should be said opinions vary on it. It was an early exponent of the present beer revival in London, but has possibly not moved with the times. Criticism tends to centre on the varying beer quality and the staff. It is a bit spit and sawdust too. On the plus sides it is handily placed and 50p per pint discounts are available to worthy people in society, including Camra members.

There are eight pumps and additionally about ten barrels in racks behind the bar. For those barrels, this was not one of the Bree's better nights. A number weren't on, two were also on pump (why would you have it from the barrel rather than from a pump?) and most bizarrely one was a Winter Warmer, something I haven't seen in June before.

The beers off pump, however, were good. In particular I enjoyed Salvation, a golden ale from Charnwood, a brewery I had not heard of previously and who had a number of beers on, and Titanic Plum Porter, which is always reliable.

One of the very best beers available in the whole country at the moment. I recommend that if you ever see it anywhere you give it a go, even if you're not normally a a stout/porter drinker. Incidentally, it's usually available in The Dispensary in Liverpool along with the brilliant White Rat from Huddersfield's Rat brewery, another "must have" whenever I see it on anywhere.

North Parade is fantastic for a night out in Bradford - some great bars.  Al's Dime Bar for a Cherry Coke cocktail if you fancy a break from the real ale . (burn the heretic!!)

Sunbridge wells also has some fine drinking establishments

And the Record Cafe on North Parade is a brilliant concept; Real ale and bar snacks downstairs, vinyl record store upstairs. The beer has been exceptional this year.

Sowerby Bridge has also turned into a cracking night out, lots of good pubs/bars, a relaxed atmosphere, we prefer it to Halifax these days

And for the pugilist, the fighting is contained in a smaller area. Seriously though, it has some pubs for grown ups, which is always welcome. It seems to be getting more popular with the out of area train crowd as well. Pity about the Puzzle Hall though.

Hebden Bridge has some good new joints since the recovery from the flood and there are now three micro pubs. It really needed some decent drinking establishments.

Also has the advantage of far better curry houses than Halifax (apologies for going off on a tangent but a curry is always great after a session)

And they work as places to order a takeaway from then trot to a dacent pub for a couple of jars before collecting said pre-ordered meal.
