Jackie died a couple of years ago as did Geoff Nugent the three fingered guitarist. They also had a tremendous sax player called Brian Jones. He's still going strong. Django Reinhardt, one of the greatest guitarists ever, lost two fingers on his left hand in a fire when he was 18, and had to re-invent his playing style completely to work around it. I play guitar and a few other instruments, but mainly play mandolin & banjo in a ceilidh band, mostly for fun, but we've ended up getting a steady stream of gigs at birthday parties, weddings etc. You do one and there's always one or two people come up afterwards and ask about their own party or whatever. The father of one of the girls in the band does all the mic/PA/sound setup for us, so the only amp I actually own is a little 20W practice amp and I don't use that much. That was " If You Don't Come Back " an old Drifters number, the " B" side was " Think" by James Brown. During a publicity stunt for this record which involved a trip through Check Point Charlie into East Berlin they got themselves arrested ! They used to play every August Bank Holiday Monday in " The Liverpool " pub down by the docks in Liverpool. They'd start about 12.00 and play through till about 7.00 pm. It was part of " The Beatles Weekend ". They usually shared the the stage with " Karl Terry and the Cruisers ". He is a great showman and puts on a superb act. They'd play for an hour and then rest for an hour in turn. It was always a fabulous day out and I went for years. Almost every pub in the centre had live bands on for most of the day and there were usually five large outdoor stages with all sorts of bands playing. I'm not a Queen fan but I remember seeing an Argentinian Queen tribute band playing at one of the outdoor stages that were better than Queen ! I also used to try a catch a band called " Maximum Who ", they were tremendous also but got fired off the largest out door stage when they refused to stop playing when the curfew deadline came around ! A few years ago Liverpool City Council decided to cancel that part of the festival on " Health and Safety " grounds and moved it out to Sefton Park. I've never been since. I can't see the atomosphere being the same. Being packing like sardines in a sweaty, heaving pub whilst a gang of old rock and rollers blew the roof off the place was a great experience. Jackie Lomax used come over specially for the event but latterly it was obvious he was suffering from the illness that killed him. Farmduck Posted December 20, 2019 Share Posted December 20, 2019 I'm currently bidding on a guitar on ebay. I don't want it but I'm trying to get a more accurate assessment of Gibson prices in OZ. There are plenty of models that retail for $3-$4K but on ebay when it's a straight auction, they struggle to hit $2K. I'm bidding on a very unusual ES-339 Studio which only has 1 pickup. Even weirder for a hollow-body, the pickup is in the bridge position. I didn't even know this model existed before I saw this one. My main thought is "Why?" These things retail for about $3400 in OZ and I've bid $920. The last Gibson I bid on, a nice ES-335, only went to $2K, despite retailing for over $3K for the last 15 years and currently $4400. I only bid about $1800 on that one, assuming there would be a last-minute surge up over $2500 but it didn't happen. So now I'm wondering what the real price on these things is. I watched a couple of YT videos about a big, famous NYC guitar shop, showing all the gems out in the storage area. It struck me at the time that, many of these guitars are theoretically $5K+ but why? If the walls of the shop are lined with $5K guitars and the back room is stacked to the ceiling with $5K guitars then is anybody ever paying $5K? So I'm bidding to push the price to a "real" level and if I end up buying it for $1500 then I got it at half price and I think I have a spare Seymour Duncan pickup around here somewhere which can go into the neck position. Farmduck Posted December 20, 2019 Share Posted December 20, 2019 Well I'm now the proud owner of one of these except mine is all black, doesn't have the neck pickup, and obviously doesn't have the 2 extra knobs or the pickup selector, and doesn't have f-holes. I've proven my point, I think, about the guitar prices. Certainly about Gibson guitar prices anyway. 20 years ago you could have easily got $2500 for practically any Gibson on OZ ebay but I only paid $915 for this one. Young seems to equal <30. I've heard maybe 3 of them, Mateus Asato, Kingfish and Melanie Faye. I guess some of them are "Instagram guitarists," which is a style/genre/something which gets some flak online. There's a good example of the modern concept of "fame" here: Mateus Asato. He is technically excellent, has 1 million Instagram followers and 350K on YT but has never released an album. He even has a very expensive Suhr Signature Model - without ever releasing an album.
