What is a DBS?

Disclosure and Barring Service check.  Checking to see if you've been a naughty boy in the past.  Two levels really, standard and enhanced (with additional blacklists to check).  Enhanced is where you're being checked to see if you're fit to be regularly left alone with vulnerable children or adults.

As with all these things, they're nothing but bum protection really because Jimmy Saville, Harold Shipman and Ian Huntley would have come up clean on them.  "But we did our DBS check, not our fault!"

Huntley wouldn't. The rest ... yup.

I'm on auto update as well so that should cut the checking time down to about five minutes.

Wouldn't Huntley have been cleared through DBS or CRB in order to get a job as a school caretaker?

He wouldn't have come up as clean as changing the vetting system was one of the things that followed a review into how he got the job  at the school in the first place. My understanding is that he would have passed a basic (which he sort of did at the time) but not an enhanced.

Thanks. That kind of explains it.

It doesn't explain what purpose a basic check serves, or have they discontinued the basic DBS?

It's still there and it does pull up offences and the like so it would catch out somebody who was lying. But any time you're genuinely working with and/or alone with vulnerable people it should be an enhanced check.

How far back do they look? And what about the rehabilitation of offenders act?

Saw a job advertised on Reed, admin assistant, Eastbourne, right next to the station, "Must have Driving License with less than 6 points"! Why? It is a single office based job. Less than 5 minutes walk from the Station.

You should go in and point out to them it should say Fewer than 6 points. That will get them on board and ready to help you.

They will point out, correctly, that for much of the history of the English language, 'less' and 'fewer' have been interchangeable and the modern-day distinction beloved of grammar pedants is arbitrary and wrong.

And you will feel like a fool.

And fewer of a man.

Your friend should ask someone who knows what they're talking about but, my understanding is, that if an offence can be spent then it shouldn't show up. But then there are a lot of offences that are never truly spent. Your friend might have an idea about those.

That surprises me, as the Danish language has exactly the same distinction, including using the comparable word for fewer.

It surprises me, too. I respect gj's opinion on many things, but I think modern English has made the distinction between few for countable nouns and less for non-countable nouns for at least 100 years. It is only recently that I have noticed a blurring of this distinction and I think it is mostly down to a decrease in the use of 'few'. Of course, English as spake by Shakespeare, was very different.

How dare you listen to that Danish twit.

Anyway, for the purposes of a joke I simplified it a bit.

The take home though is that less than 10 or fewer than 10 would have been fine throughout all of the history of the English language until the invention of the Waitrose queue.

It's not a black and white answer, and the rules changed a few years ago - this may help: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/dbs-filtering-guidance/dbs-filtering-guide

I think they're a bit late!  Mind you, having said that, social media is pretty present and so getting going so close to May could be the best policy.

I'll have a look to find out how much they are paying!

You may as well; you've been doing it for free on here long enough. :P

She had been fighting hard for a job, and I take it you are posting a little tongue in cheek, but I would love to see her get the job!

Plenty of people on here who could give a reference to her persistence!

Yes, my post was tongue in cheek, hence the :P

I've wished Saintslass (sincere) luck with her job hunting previously on this thread. That still stands.

Although we disagree on many (most!) things, I wouldn't wish misfortune on her, or any other forum member. I've had periods of unemployment myself in recent years; I know just how hard and disheartening it can be.

There's very little more soul destroying than getting another "no", or even worse no reply at all.
