Pretty good call in my opinion.

Always a tough call when including players from 50-70 years or more ago as many of those players would not rate as high in the modern game with size, physicality and stamina.

Brisbane had a top team with many Test players as they were in a privileged position in the game in Australia back in those days, it was part of the reason that led to the Super League Wars.

I think it's important to highlight the nitwitery of the above statement in the context of this topic.

He states "size" to undermine past greats of the game, This same thinking almost could have denied Johnathan Thurston a chance to ever play NRL given he was knocked back by clubs for being to small!. Some body better go back in time and tell Allen Langer & Toovey to take up marbles because Allora says there to small to cut the mustard.

It's also laughable to suggest the like of Hayne would even get a mention was he of the same era as RL immortals Clive Churchill of Graham Langlands who played god forbid 50-70 years ago!  good old allora would have us believe they wouldn't cut it up against the drones running about today (he's either trolling or clueless).

Allora as I'm sure you have plenty of spare time on your hands I suggest you do some research on champions like Ron Coote, Bobby Mccarthy , Reg Gasnier & Jonny Raper and think about what they would be had they been able to be full time professionals, Then think what that premadonna Jarryd hayne would have accomplished in there era, My bet is he wouldn't have even made reserve grade.

How can you so passionately defend the great players of past and argue they would be just as good today (which I agree with by the way) and then go on to say that the modern greats wouldn't cut it in the past. Surely the argument works in both directions?

My view is the great players would be greats in any era.

Hi Dunbar,

Because those guys back in the 50's through to 80's where real footballers with built in toughness about them as apposed to being athletes like todays players (I exclude the likes of cam smith, slater, cronk and james graham from this as they would go well in any era). Past greats like Mccarthy, Coote, Gasner etc would easily adapt and the thrive in todays game where as a guy like Hayne couldn't be taught to be tough it's either in you or it isn't and a honest plodder like Hindy couldn't all of a sudden become a skilful ball playing forward and nor could he mix it up front against Lurch O'neil, Led Davidson, Malcolm Reilly etc he'd have been exposed badly.

With respect, I think you are mixing the way that the game is played in different eras with a players ability to adapt and cope.

Just as the past greats would adapt to playing in the modern era with the 21st century focus on conditioning, diet etc so woild the modern players adapt to an era where the game was tougher (although tougher is a difficult one anyway as the modern game is physically harder than ever before... Just not as violent).

We don't know who would thrive in different styles as we have simply not seen them play a game in that way. So I fall back to my previous statement that a great rugby league player woild be great in any era.

Feels like there must be better Lancastrian options on the wings, but I was struggling to find them!

I'd have McTigue over Morley, and Morley on the bench over Gregory.

Could nick Brian Bevan on "residency". He's as Lancastrian than Adrian Lam is a Queenslander.

Probably Egan for Cunningham too.

That's the one! Not a bad team, either. I know I'm not the only Wigan fan with fond memories of Robbie McCormack's brief tenure at the club, not to mention the Iro brothers.

A much easier selection, since they only had about 20 players during their existence. Maybe, if I can find a list, I'll do a Kent Invicta all-stars team next! :D

That was just established to get SL muscling in on Newcastle wasn't it

Yep, Newcastle Knights allied themselves to the ARL, so the Mariners were formed. They got to the final of the WCC, which isn't bad for a team that never won an away game in the club season. They lost to the Brisbane Broncos in that WCC decider. No shame there, when you consider the Broncos' squad during the SL era.

They were killed off, along with the Western Reds and the South Queensland Crushers, in 1997, as part of the re-amalgamation of the ARL and SL.

The only match I got to see in the Australian SL version of the WCC was Brisbane v St Helens. Quite a slaughter!

Okay, Saints were off form and under strength, but the clinical demolition was still impressive. A rookie called Lockyer played a few minutes in that match.
