Kingstone Press League One Super 8s

Keepmoat Stadium

Attendance | 536

The Dons missed out on the chance to secure their place in the Kingstone Press League One play-offs as they fell to a 28-24 defeat to Newcastle Thunder at the Keepmoat Stadium.

Richard Horne’s side led until 12 minutes from time, but a late try from the visitors means they go into the final game of the Super 8s against Toronto just one point in front of Newcastle and Keighley Cougars.

The Dons started the game well and got the opening try after just four minutes, a grubber kick through from Kyle Kesik was pounced upon by Pete Green who put the ball down. Jack Miller added the simple conversion for 6-0.

Newcastle responded almost immediately and had a try of their own inside the opening 10 minutes, Salford-bound centre Derrell Olpherts punished the Dons’ defence with a strong run down the left and had enough time to put the ball down.

The visitors went in front five minutes later, as Benn Hardcastle’s kick through found prop-forward Liam McAvoy who wrestled his way to the try-line under pressure from three defenders. Hardcastle converted to make the score 6-10.

The Dons were struggling for field position and Thunder took full advantage as the game edged towards the half-hour mark, this time Vincent Rennie was the man to profit as he powered his way over. Hardcastle was again on the money with the conversion. 6-16.

Horne’s side were not out of the game though and pulled a try back after 38 minutes, Jordie Hedges found Jason Muranka close to the line and the Serbian international went over for his first try of the League One season. Miller converted to reduce the deficit further. 12-16.

The Dons were to go in level at the break after a superb team try. Kieran Cross chipped the ball over the top of the Newcastle defence, before a cut out pass from Pete Green found Jason Tali who went over for a try against his former club.

HALF TIME | Doncaster RLFC 16-16 Newcastle Thunder

The Dons went in front 10 minutes after half time, they were awarded a penalty just a few metres out and Miller successfully converted to make the score 18-16.

An end-to-end game then took another twist as Newcastle full-back Lewis Young found a gap in the Dons defensive line and raced 35 metres to go over under the sticks and put his side back in front. Hardcastle added the two once again for 18-22.

Kieran Cross then put the Dons back in control just after the hour mark, producing a moment of magic as he has done so often this season, evading a number of defenders to score the Dons’ fourth try of the afternoon. Miller couldn’t add the two though and the scores were level with a quarter of the game remaining.

The Dons were awarded another penalty soon after with Nick Rawsthorne taking over the kicking duties, he converted superbly from 35 metres out to make the score 24-22.

Thunder would have the last laugh though and sealed the win with a try on 68 minutes. Hooker Evan Simons created space with the ball in hand and went over under the sticks to leave the Dons empty handed.

Hakim Miloudi was sent from the field inside the final minute after a coming together between the two sets of players, to further frustrate the Dons faithful.
