First post on the forum.

I'm a long time RL fan from Cambridge, Ontario.. about 60 miles from Toronto.  I was transferred to Aus, and I lived in North Sydney, NSW about 20 years ago and got addicted, and really missed it on our return to Canada.

My wife and I went to 5-6 Wolfpack matches this year, and are excited about the move up, as well as the new signings.

Can you confirm that RL is quite easy to follow as a Canadian. Are the similarities to downs and plays etc overstated or does it click with locals?

How do you feel about supporting TWP when there are no Canadians in the team ? Is it an Issue even?  Love the atmosphere at Lamport.

Having only three Canadians  is no worries for me personally, obviously it would be nice to have more and will hopefully happen over time (decade or so).

Pro sports don't work that way in North America. None of the Blue Jays baseball team are from Toronto (I think). Even if there were five SL level players from Canada, why would they have to play for Toronto? They could go to any SL team? It is a global economy now.

It doesn't seem important in Premier League soccer either.

Sometimes it's difficult to know what's going on when hype obscures reality. The London debacle is a lesson learned but some people prefer to make their own mistakes I guess.

The cross code forum included a discussion comparing two clubs going into new areas.  London Welsh went to Oxford and failed, Wasps went to Coventry and prospered.

The criteria seem to be the same for any rugby league club going into a new area or any rugby league club generally.

The criteria for success appear to be:
1. A town with either enough population and wealth or a strong tradition in the game
2. Good management
3. Enough financial backing
4. A suitable and stable venue

That seems to be the reality.  No club with these four fail and no club with them prosper (though, preparation time might help).  London were terribly run, and did not have a suitable venue.  Highfield were the same.  Gateshead had financial backing withdrawn, Crusaders failed on point 1 and PSG had corrupt management and failed on point 2.  Catalans had all four and took an extra year to prepare.

TWP appear to have all four.

Good points .I would add a fifth criteria for success also. That would be a strong governing body , the RFL , which is debatable. Lack of direction by them , as shown by their constant dithering will hamstring most ventures.

I would not accept that.  Under the RFL, some clubs have succeeded and others have failed.

If you or anyone else knows what format the Superleague will be in 5 years let alone next season I'd be surprised. Any business plan based on an unknowable but hugely Important thing like franchising or PR  is flawed from the start.

I am not saying it is unimportant.

In this quote you appeal to look at reality.  What we know is why have expansion efforts in rugby union where one propers and one failed.  We have several in rugby league in which a couple have prospered and several failed.  Both sporting bodies have seen success and failure, so clearly it is possible to succeed and proper under the RFU or the RFL and possible to fail under the RFU or the RFL.

Why do you keep questioning this when you get the same response every time?

Repetition fallacies abound mate.  There was still 'outrage' yesterday in certain Facebook groups over the lack of salary cap and the money the RFL has wasted on Toronto.  No amount of evidence to the contrary will ever be enough to satisfy personal belief.

I knew the Wolfpack were breaking the salary cap the moment they signed Steve Crossley.

I'm English. London. If a London team was all Canadian I would have little Interest in them. I don't like/follow the EPL. I'm surprised by the level of support the TWP get. Long may it continue , it just doesn't make any sense to me.

When the Portuguese team from Lisbon get promoted to the super League with their team from NSW in ten years time you might better understand my anguish. There is no progress with this mindset. Rugby League is again badly run by what seems the traditional Inept cartel.

That would depend on whether in 20 years that had garnered enough interest within the country to support a stable domestic competition and had started to produce players of reasonable calibre.  The beginnings have to begin somewhere.  They may not even take hold, but that doesn't mean you should stop looking outward and onward.

The more places it's played the more likely the player pool will expand. Duh

I find it easier to follow than rugby union for example.

The 6 tackles concept is a little bit similar to 3 downs / 4 downs in Can / US football.

It only takes a game or two to figure it all out.

I don't think it's an issue at all.

Over time, there will be more Canadians. Even Toronto FC (soccer / football) had few Canadians in beginning years and now probably about 25 - 30% of the team is. And with that, they are the best team in the league.

I assume Wolfpack will get involved in youth rugby aT some point, but right now their plate is pretty full.

Good to hear.Thanks. Alternate truths seem ok.
