Catalan Referendum

Recommended Posts

Seems to be a bit of a mess.

Though you won't be surprised that RT, bots and the usual suspects are poking around.

With the best, thats a good bit of PR, though I would say the Bedford team, theres, like, you know, 13 blokes who can get together at the weekend to have a game together, which doesnt point to expansion of the game. Point, yeah go on!

Once again a government which would claim to be "free" and "democratic" slaps down freedom and democracy

Today is almost certainly the day spain lost catalonia. Independence may not  happen quickly but the spanish have driven formerly ambivalent catalans away from them and towards the separists

Without doubt.

Can you just imagine if the UK police had acted similarly towards the Scots?

These people are truly amazing with their mind control.

It puts me in mind of the RFL, who can be, according to the fans, both utterly useless and yet still juggle so many effective but completely conflicting conspiracies. B)

I thought that putin was against the Catalan referendum. Calling it illegal which is a bit rich considering Crimea.

They certainly will have - I still have some close friends in the Girona area; it'll be interesting to hear what they have to say.

Other than my dad's relative (Marie Rimmer MP) causing an incident, the behaviour of all the key players in the Referendum was impeccably civil and law abiding. Shocking behaviour by elements of the Spanish Authorities.

It seems extraordinary that the league is forcing the game to be played.

It is almost as if they are trying to give the situation even more opportunities to escalate.

Absolutely shocking what's been going on today. Calling the referendum was a crude act from the Catalan nationalists but literally everything the central Spanish government has done since has made the situation worse.  If they'd just let them run it they'd have had a vote for the status quo and could at least have justified their position on Catalonia but I'd be stunned if we don't now see a surge in support for Catalan independence on both a political and, potentially, terrorist level.

"If you want a vision of the future, imagine a boot stamping on a human face...forever." - George Orwell (inspired by his experience of 1930s Catalonia).

Imagine if we had sent the London MET police, Riot Police & Military Police to stop the Scots from voting in 2014?

That's what the Spanish government are doing in Catalonia. The defence of the Spanish government is to say 'the whole of Spain should decide on Catalan Independence.'

That would have been like having the whole of the UK vote on Scottish Independence - ridiculous.

This isn't even a protest. It's a vote. They are sending jackboots in to destroy a referendum - which has had a large turnout despite suppression.

Most disappointing is the 'deafening silence' from the EU - saying nothing when your member states do this to EU citizens makes a mockery of claims that the EU upholds Democracy & Human Rights.

I'm as passionate about remaining in the Eu as anyone..... but I agree wholeheartedly with your comments

What's been the British response?

For those who talk about laws.

Article 7 of the treaty on European Union:
"suspension of the member state which makes military use of the population".

Catalonia: 762 wounded, 2 in serious condition.

What is the European Union waiting for?

Spain isn't Hungary or Poland; the EU won't speak out against one of the bigger member states.

The UK has to be careful because of Gibraltar IMO but Boris Johnson has made a comment.

I'd never been to a Catalans game until I went to see Fev play them on the 9th Sept., so am unaware whether it is customary to sing the Catalan National Anthem before every game.  But they certainly sang it that day.  Whether this was connected with upcoming events the other side of the border or because of the imminence of the Catalans' national day, I couldn't say.  The Catalan flag was certainly in evidence on the streets of Perpignan though.  I also noticed that the Catalan language was on signs along with French.  It would seem that should Catalunya gain independence from Spain, the French bit might want to join in too.
