Media Watch World Cup

Recommended Posts

My heart sank as I saw 12 column inches about Hardacre on the back page of the i today and I thought that was it.

On page 49 however was almost a full page of analysis of the world cup squad including training schedules and warm up match.

Well done!

I know I bought the i today and was like ffs. But alas like you say the rest of the coverage was good.

PROUD TO BE A MEMBER OF http://www.rugbyleaguecares.org/ and http://www.walesrugbyleague.co.uk/article/8790/join-team-wales-for-2013

Predictions for the future -

Crusaders RL to get a franchise for 2012 onwards -WRONG

Widnes Vikings also to get a franchise - RIGHT

Crusaders RL to do the double over Widnes and finish five places ahead of them -WRONG

Widnes Vikings NOT to dominate rugby league in years to come! STILL TO COME

I promise to pay 10 to the charity of Bomb Jacks choice if Widnes Millionaires finish above the battling underdogs Crusaders RL. I OWE A TENNER!

Great stuff.

Colin Dixon was one of my favourite players and he was a gent from what I recall.

I remember Chester's father, Peter, playing a few games for Huddersfield Town. He was a hard working midfield player.

I lack the skill to post links, but the coverage down under has been 99% informed, upbeat and engaged. Far better than I would have expected.

When you're posting, there's an icon for links which looks like a chain link, if you click on that a dialog comes up with a field for the URL and one for whatever descriptive text you'd like to include.

Just had my first sighting of the BBC's RWC promo, shown just a few minutes ago during Match of the Day. The presentation is the same as their SLS trailers, with the stylised, faceted figures.

The trailer was also repeated immediately after MotD.

It really is a terrible promo. Makes us look like cartoon figures of fun.

Genuinely bemused why both the BBC and Sky cover RL with such clownish, knockabout foolishness. Other sports don't get it, particularly for a World Cup. We deserve so much better.

No expense spared then? Really trying to show the personalities in our game? Why didn't they do a whole trailer around Sam Burgess or something?

The BBC trailer using the usual animated figures is cheap and is the bare minimum they  could hope get away will.

Using animated figures does not engage viewers and keeps the real personalities in our game hidden, making sure that Britain's best kept sporting secret (RL) remains in its box.

The trailer does not show the skills on display or the intensity of the game it just makes it look like a comical side show.

I haven't seen it but I guess they have really made an effort then based on 4 years ago (below)? Can you think of any other televised sport ever having a World Cup (with the same broadcaster) using the same theme over 4 years?

The BBC have been using the same intro graphics for Athletics for several years now. They will probably have to change it next year, as Usain Bolt is heavily featured. BT Sport's MotoGP coverage has had the same graphics for even longer.

Ours has been 100% player free for years and years.

So has the BT Sport one I mentioned.

There's always a risk with featuring specific faces for a tournament, as the Athletics World Championship found out a few years ago. Nearly all the stars featured on the host city's banners, programme covers and TV intros either pulled out at the last minute, got injured in their first qualifiers or otherwise failed badly in their first appearance. It was nearly a week 'til the first featured star won anything.

Not when it is a World Cup as it generally focuses on the prestige and iconic moments.
