C’mon he was brilliant today.

Give him his due he worked tirelessly and defended brilliant, took pressure off the forwards too.

Totally agree. We can see why he is on the field today he was like a lion. However, him being on the field means we have to accept that left side is going to starve Hall of opportunities.

I have criticised the selection of Bateman at centre throughout this tournament but he did well today and did everything that he was selected to do in that position. He is never going to get Hall away and has his obvious flaws at centre but Bennett isn't going to change this for the final, when he hasn't the entire tournament.

Bateman played very well today and deserves big wraps. But he is still never a centre: all of his instincts are to make runs back towards the middle/posts rather than create room out wide and, God forbid, pass to his winger.

I don't think his selection at centre is the right one, but we are where we are now. Bennett will not change his mind and Bateman will not change his style of play in the next week.

I can confirm 30+ less sales for Scotland vs Italy at Workington, after this afternoons test purchase for the Tonga match, £7.50 is extremely reasonable, however a £2.50 'delivery' fee for a walk in purchase is beyond taking the mickey, good luck with that, it's cheaper on the telly.

I don't think that Hall received a single pass, did he? We all know what he can do and the tries he can score from impossible positions. Bateman needs to be told to pass to him.

How many times did we push the ball that way in attack without hitting Burgess as the lead runner? Don't think Watkins got much service either.

D I don’t think Bateman was given the ball with any space to make a pass today. Our attack definitely has a bias to the right.

I feel that.  Not sure if any stats but I recall Bateman got man and ball once.  Hall is my favourite player but involved himself less today than previous weeks .  He stopped one overlap in an awkward but effective way.

Im a huge fan of Bateman, but not at centre. Michael Jennings is for me the best at centre at the moment. Not many specialist around. Duggan is quality, but its easy for Aussies just see on Saturday morning!! Chambers will terrorise Bateman he'll definitly need burgess as his 2nd row I wouldn't like to have burgess at 13 if SO is ruled out.

Bateman is there because of his defense not for his attacking qualities and him and Hall will have their work cut out next week stopping Holmes and his centre partner.

I'd have Hall and McGillvary over Holmes any day of the week. People are raving about Holmes on the back of him scoring 11 tries, which were either walk ins or where he'd received the ball in plenty of space. Put Hall or McGillvary on Australia's wing the last couple of weeks and I'd be confident they'd have at least 11 tries too.

I believe that the last pass Hall saw coming his way was the one Burgess threw in the 10th row against PNG.

This is the point though, that whole left side looks on edge in defence. Burgess looks more comfortable in the middle, Gale is a defensive weak link, Bateman doesn't position himself as a centre should and ends up compensating for Gale - something Australia will exploit and Hall on the wing is being drawn in because it seems everyone is compensating for someone else.

All this makes our left side defence evenmore juttery than the attack.

I think its a given that Australia will attack our left hand side. They won't go after our right because of the threat that McGillvary and Watkins carry if the move breaks down

Agreed though with Ryan Hall and Luke Gale it shouldn't be a foregone conclusion either.

Bateman can pass to his centre but he doesn't really have a centres instincts. The reasoning for playing him at centre is presumably because Bennett thinks Bateman offers more in other areas, one of those being defence. He's certainly defended pretty well throughout the tournament (besides one missed tackle that led to a try). It's not just defence though. It's his ability in contact too. His strength makes his carries more effective than Percival's. With Watkins at right centre, even though he's gets more involved now, he's still not a real hard worker down the middle and that's where Bateman provides something that no other centre does to the same extent.

I'm sure the Aussie's will try to target our left edge but any sensible coach would do that having seen Luke Gale's defence. That is probably another reason why Bateman is there instead of Percival. He may see Bateman as a stronger defensive presence and someone who can protect his halfback.

He was terrific yesterday in attack and defence. We need to find a way to keep them under 20 and score 20. Any weak links will be exploited by Australia relentlessly, and will mean we will lose. Plus we need the most resilient and mentally tough players we have. Bateman qualifies on all counts. He was superb when we beat cronulla - and that level of performance is exactly what we need.

No,Bateman can't or won't pass to his winger and I wonder how many more England would have scored if he didn't cut inside all the time.

Defensively he's been good but not offered much as an attacking threat but to be fair he hasn't  let this current England side down .

I just hope he has another good game against the aussies.

Thank you for your valuable contribution.
