Interesting reading the comments regarding Sarginson.... It raises a question in my mind given some of the comments on his area's of weakness,    Do our clubs not have coaches that can improve the established players on specific skills. I assume he must have shown the requisite basics level to be an established SL player, do we not focus on taking them onward to other levels, until they final retire... or is that naive.

Too many games played. Too much coming back from injury and of course the need to be as strong and fast as possible.

No real time for skills work sadly. As skills Is the real difference between Oz and England.

I think the 16-20 year old phase is where this has to be done more.

your probably right.

It would seem to me to be relatively easier at academy and younger age level... Harder at a more senior level, where its more about the little differences and takes more time. Hence more likely to focus on something else.  Although a player himself can ensure the time and focus if the club employ the right level and number of specialist coaches.

As ever with RL lack of money. NFL have position specific coaching. You will not see that in RL as the game doesn't have the money for it.

A longer off season would help with skills as would less games. Both are very very unlikely..

Mate, that is so way off the mark.  The NRL has specific coaches aplenty.  Not so much in SL, but we still have specific people for specific training, some clubs more than others and dependant on how well off they are. We aren’t as rich as NRL to cover it as widely though.

OKay fair enough re NRL. Skills gap I was talking about was in SL, but should have made that clear rather than say RL overall.

There shouldn’t be a massive skills gap.  If there is, then it just needs hard work to put it right.  GC knew what Sargison could do before they bought him, so whatever they thought, they could handle.  I think his issue was the new coach, which is fair enough.

In Sarginson defence, GC thought Marcus Bai was not good enough and look where that went.

Yep, but I guess Leeds are one of the most financial sound clubs does anybody know what specialist skill coaches (as distinct from nutritional and physical "body building"/gym  type)  they employ compared to a typical NRL franchise.

‘ specialist’ needs clarify.

Engaging a specialist wrestler/judo expert will be done selectively if at all needed now.  The same with kicking coaches, such as Aldred.

You will find that BMc and Barry will control the 1st team and, but not all the time, ‘group’ coaches like Simon Bell, Pete Clarkson, who are still with the academy, and several U16 coaches will assist.  Normal for all SL clubs.
