In 1897 the station also witnessed the first ever winners of Rugby Leagues Challlenge cup (known then as the Northern Union cup) , Batley rlfc defeated St Helens by 10 points to 3 at Leeds Headingley Stadium , the Batley team then had tea at the Exchange Restaurant before departing Leeds on the 7.30 train. Not many of those who were privileged to see and hear the reception accorded the victors on the arrival home at Batley Station will forget the spectacle and pandemonium that prevailed. The first notification of their arrival , was as they exited Morley tunnel with the discharge of no fewer than one hundred and sixty fog horn blasts , the deafening cracks of which were ably seconded by thousands of hoarse-voiced , lusty lunged enthusiasts, who crowded all available space along Station road and Hick lane , these two, and in fact all other principle thoroughfares, were also packed solid , presenting to the onlookers nothing but a heaving relentless sea of animated faces. a procession was formed from the train station to Batley town hall , led by Batley old band, that night went down in Batley folk lore and rugby league history.
