The biggest mistake in that article is that the headline says "7 Amazing sports ..." then includes Curling.

France apparently.

Incredible how somebody can get something so wrong in the modern day.

Wow! France 1934, eh? That's a whole higher level of wrong than usual.

No byline on the article, which is a shame.

It's so wrong you'd have to wonder where they got it from. The only thing I can imagine is hearsay from someone who has the wrong end of the stick regarding the game in France. You'd expect better from the BBC than:

Journalist: Hey guys I'm writing an article on where different sports came from, does anyone know where Rugby League came from?

Office staff 1: Pretty sure it was France in about 1934.

Journalist: That's good enough for me, in it goes.

Office staff 2: Don't you think you should check?

Journalist: No point, OS1 said he was pretty sure and it'll take forever to find out the actual answer.

Get on to the BBC to put it right.

I'm not really bothered they've got it wrong. I simply can't believe somebody working as a journalist could get something so easy to find wrong like that.

If they'd said it was invented in 1922 then it's a bit lazy but this is obviously based on one person's misunderstood general knowledge that they were so confident in they couldn't be bothered taking 30 seconds to check it.

What do you expect from the BBC, bunch of morons

They probably think American Football was invented in Russia

Where's snooker on the list?

Everyone’s ‘obsessed’ don’t ya know . Funny how the beeb go huge on the few sports they cover . To be honest the Winter Olympics seems one of the biggest overhyped padded out non events

That whole article is lowest common denominator tripe as well as unbelievable. Who wrote that ! And we are just a variation on rugby union as a passing thought to them which also says a lot , as well as an inaccurate one .

You should've sent one and said, 'Get your facts straight, it was invented in 1919 in Russia as a working class version of rugby.'

Have some fun seeing how ridiculous we can get it changed to.

Love it ....

"The story (possibly untrue, but widely accepted) goes that in 1823 a student called William Webb Ellis picked the ball up during a football match and ran with it, thus inventing the basic premise of the sport." Possibly untrue! Widely accepted? Euphemism for more than a century's worth of porky pies.

"Rugby league, a variation on the sport, was created in France in 1934." A variation of kick and clap? They should be so lucky.

Sad to say cross code incoming!

I have lodged an official complaint, also pointed out that the Webb Ellis story is a myth.

thinking about it, it would be difficult to put a date on it really wouldnt it. In 1895 it was Rugby under a different governing body. You could argue that we were the same sport at that point. At what point did it diverge enough to become a separate sport?  Because often, in the old days, there were divergent rules between the RFL, the QRL and NSWRL and largely the interactions between them were for tours and tests where rules will be agreed on an ad-hoc basis, were we one sport then?

You could argue it was in 1948 with the creation of the RLIF as there was then a governing body and codified relationship between all the governing bodies as one sport.

Whichever date we choose, im not sure you can get close to making a cogent argument for it being 1934

December 1895 we changed the rules, some of those changes made our game very distinct from union.

And I would personally like to thank the French for inventing the Greatest Game because without them clearly the choices would be between synchronized swimming, curling, paint drying and  harakiri.
