New York RL vs New York RU

Recommended Posts

With the  'Major League Rugby' competition kicking off this year in the US , it was announced last month that a new team in New York would be joining the competition in 2019 (playing exhibition games this year). Could this be more than merely a coincidence with the potential league team being set up from 2019 ? Should we be worried ?

Ps . Apologies if this has been posted previously

To be fair, if they are trying to revive the MLR (or whatever it was called last time), New York is one of those cities where you really need to have a presence.

A team playing in a Gaelic football ground which holds 2,000 people is not really a threat tbh.

Actually, it is a sign they are not completely stupid!

League had no bearing on this.  NY Athletic Club which are one of the top 10 amateur rugby clubs in the country have been trying to start a professional side for awhile.  This is the outcome of that.

Hahahahaha!!

MLR will be lucky to survive one season. Union at the absolute highest level is absolutely boring. And this isn't anywhere near the highest level.

It's not really that Rugby Union is an inferior product which is why it may be 'a worry'. It's more that 99% of the population of New York know that there is a sport called 'Rugby' with no differentiation between the two . A Union team setting up this year under the Rugby tag, may steal some of the League clubs thunder and impact with the public  when (if) it launches next season.

If that was how it really is, that people will objectively look at the sports and judge, you must think it is just an amazing coincidence that so many AFL fans live in Melbourne, so many handball fans live in Viborg and so many baseball fans live in Tokyo.

Who gets to decide what objectivity is? Fans of those sports will argue just as much as any rl fan that their respective sport is objectively the best

Yes.  Objectivity has very little to do with it.

I'll be amazed if they don't sell it out every game. NY won't be the problem for MLR.

It doesn't look to be a sell out when they played the Ontario Arrows last week, a High School level crowd at best:
