England Squad for Denver if it Were Picked Now

Who should be?

There is no answer to that and probably why we are not currently World Champions.

Gale is the incumbent and is a better all round player than Myler but he is far from a top England number 7 at present. Richardson is too inexperienced yet and Sneyd, Mellor and whoever are in the same boat as Myler. So Gale wins by a snozz but for England to be top class we either need Gale to be much much better or to find someone fundamentally better.

Everybody knows none of the options at 7 are ideal, its a pretty average group and as it stands id agree that gale is the best all round player out of them, but the question was if the england team was picked now on form. If thats the criteria, then mylers got as good a case as anybody imo.

The thing is the Denver game is a bonus for us in this respect. You can try say walker and Richardson and if they are a little away from where they need to be. Fine you don't have to start them in the series at the end of the year but they have gained great experience. Conversley they may shine and continue to do so for the rest of the year and demand a place in the side. We play so little RL that we can't really blood players slowly.

This seems a perfect opportunity to look at a couple of youngsters who, on the back of absolutely stellar seasons might force their way in anyway, or more likely force their way in to the 2019 ashes series or 2020 Australia tour.

The opposite problem is we have about 15 games between now and the next WC, where Widdop will be 34, Gale 34, Roby 36, Graham 36, Tomkins 34, and a couple injuries and we are left throwing someone in to an ashes series or world cup without any experience. Giving the likes of walker and Richardson 2 or 3 caps in these games against NZ would be ideal preparation for when they do need to come in

Widdop will only be 32 at the World Cup in 2021. I would imagine that is a perfect age to be leading England around on the big stage.

These squad lists always amuse me, it's basically the same players from the usual clubs then 2 or 3 young lads from Wigan, Leeds and saints who have had a couple of decent games suddenly becoming international class

Are Richardson and walker for instance any better than more established players at other clubs or are we, like we have done for the last 20 years including players because of who they play for?

18 months ago it was all about George Williams, now he's chucked onto the scrapheap for the next young lad who's had 5 decent games, what about Marshall and Davies at Wigan? Surely they are now better than everyone else by the fact they play for Wigan

It’s suggested that the team here is picked on form this season, hence some of the young lads who are playing really well getting named. No ones suggesting that those not picked are on the scrap heap.

lighten up !

Kevin Penny was a superstar, being thrown into international teams after 10 games,

I think we should just let these young kids grow and develop before we start lauding them as superstars etc.

Just my opinion mind.

Was he ? Always thought he was an extremely quick winger who couldn't tackle.

In fairness, he got some amazing raps in his first 10-12 games after his debut. I remember him being extremely impressive at both Leeds (Sky) and St Helens (BBC) in big televised games. The rest his history but many good judges thought he was the real deal.
