Watched Comfort and Joy last night - recorded from Xmas Eve. Thoroughly enjoyed it, Bill Paterson is very good

If you like Bill Forsyth films, a lesser-known one of his was shown on BBC Scotland recently, so is available on the iPlayer here: https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/m000q17w/that-sinking-feeling

Thanks for that - not seen it before

Me neither, but it'll be available for several months yet and I'm looking forward to discovering it.

Bill Patterson was the best actor in Local Hero, the award for "Wooden Plank" went to Burt Lancaster, I thought his acting in that was nearly as bad as in his last ever film, Field of Dreams.

Was Bill Paterson in Local Hero? I don't remember him in that, and IMDB doesn't list him.

Sorry, my mistake, it was Bill Forsyth.

Forsyth was the director. Denis Lawson, perhaps?

I saw Paddington 2 with the family at Park Royal a little while back and I agree with Bedford Roughyed it is a really good film.

Yes. But on balance I think the best films over Christmas period would be, Rio Bravo, The Man Who Shot Liberty Balance and She Wore a Yellow Ribbon.  If The Searchers was on, I missed it.

There is a trend there... and I must say the vast majority of millennial movies and erm, comedians,  fail in the entertainment stakes for me.

To be honest, despite the critical acclaim of the Daniel Craig films, they don't do it for me at all. I have twice fallen asleep trying to watch 'Casino Royale', despite all the running, jumping and shooting.

Yes, there are some terrible older Bond movies (like Moonraker or Die another Day), but there are also some exciting and fun ones too.

Casino Royal was intended to reboot the series and i thought it did a job of it.  But subsequently it became clear that they ran out of ideas. And very quickly.

As a similar vein, Star Wars was a huge and fresh invention, and not on a silly budget.  It had charm.  Amazingly the sequal was just as good - untill the last 5 minutes... the 'I am your father' moment.  Thereafter it ran out of ideas despite 7 more films.  Terminator 1 and 2 ditto.

Originality is a rare commodity.

All I'll say is it wasn't the best one to start with. A lot of people like it for some reason but it is very overrated in my opinion. Please don't let that one put you off the rest of the series. I could tell you what are my favourites but I would just say start at the beginning and work your way through. Some are utter dog doo doo but some are brilliant as well as you would expect with any film series that's been running since 1962.

Watched it last night - enjoyed the film. Then also found Gregorys Girl on the UKTV website and had another watch of that

I watched it’s a wonderful life in colour this year. I also watched once upon a time in the west. with the family I watched fantastic beasts one and two. I like the first one but the second one was a little dark I thought.

Talking of critically acclaimed films that one has only just got around to, I finally saw "No Country for Old Men" a couple of days ago. I have to say I found it incredibly hollow. All style and no substance.

If you like westerns then Open Range is good. Last 5 minutes were a bit languid,  but a good recently made western in the Jimmy Stewart /Anthony Mann mould.

The Great Outdoors (1988)

John Candy, Dan Aykroyd, Annette Bening and (sigh) Lucy Deakins. Plus a very angry bear with a grudge and three sarcastic raccoons.

A family comedy from two of SNL's Golden Generation, plus a fine supporting cast. If you liked the National Lampoon 'Vacation' films - well, the good ones anyway - this is right in the same bracket.

If you feel Annette Bening is impressive then look up The Grifters.
