We got our council tax bill in today.  Apparently I overpaid by one month in this year so it has reduced next year's bill.

I pay my mortgage and council tax manually rather than by direct debit because both the council and the Halifax have screwed them up in the past.  I just got the council one wrong and paid an extra payment at the end of January when it was in the two months off period.  If I get them wrong then I can blame myself rather than trying to convince another organisation that refuses to admit it could ever get anything wrong.

Im trying to sort my tax now. I officially finish with my current company at the end of March. They will withhold my salary in order to ensure my full tax bill is fully paid. As i start a new job in April/May, i'm hoping i can just continue to pay monthly.

This will be a difficult conversation.

I am off today and having a lazy morning, the wife stuck on Jeremy Vine’s Channel 5 show.  Deary me, it’s Kipper central, isn’t it?  Hang ‘em and flog ‘em over the Begum woman and her baby. Sell off the NHS. And so on.

Headphones on and into my comfy champagne socialism with James O’Brien.

Our neighbours are having their trees topped out, I’m at home today so asked them to quote for mine getting done as well given they look like they’re doing a good job.  £50, and they’ll do it today.  I think that’s the cheapest I’ve ever had that sort of work done.

Now go and ask for a VAT receipt.

That'll be £50 back pocket, and their boss won't even know.

It's too cheap to be the "unregulated, itinerant" end of the market.

Had one group knock on my door a few years ago and offer to cut back my 450 year old Oak Tree.

"Mr Smith" took a look at it quoted £500 and then asked why they plant trees like that so close to houses.

Did I mention the house was built in 1986?

He was told to sling his hook at the high port.

It was the boss who quoted me!  He did it before sodding off to do other quotes on other bits of work

I was doing a house clearance for BHF Sat 2 march, and the boss (Van Driver is self-employed) went off to leave a freezer with someone in Maidstone, and do a quote, for another House clearance, telling me to clear the room that was an office, and he'll be back in an hour. 2 hours later he returned, with me sitting in the garden with a load of ex-desks, and filing cabinets (from IKEA), that I had managed to destroy on my own, didn't get any more for it. Got another one tomorrow.

Back in 2017, we went to see Tom Petty at Hyde Park and have had spam from the event ever since.  Today I got notification of a "must see" event this summer: Barbra Streisand.

I will wake up one day and it'll be still early 2016...

I have to go into London now by train.  I'll be there mid-afternoon but the meeting finishes at 5pm.  I have a choice, book a peak train or wait until nearly 7pm so I can use an off-peak one.  £50 difference in price.  I think I'll find a quiet coffee place and wait...

Not in Kings Cross you won't. Try the pub, they are usually quiet round there.

There’s a few around Liverpool Street that aren’t that bad, even at rush hour

I’m in a coffee shop waiting on my train and there’s a group of lecturers behind me planning next week’s lessons.

Senior: “We’re covering game theory next week, how are you with that and have you gone through the materials?”

Older chap: “I’ve never been one for games, I can barely turn on my computer”.

(Tumbleweed...)

I’m sitting here sniggering away and hoping I don’t get seen.

After a respectful pause, other young lady: “you’re not joking, are you?”

That just makes it worse :D

Awful to read. Hope you're as okay as possible. My sincere condolences.

Sorry to hear about your loss.  The cancer charities in most areas have grief councilling services who have been through this many times with others and can genuinely help families in your situation.

Sorry for your loss. Whether their passing is quick or slow, it still hurts when someone you care for goes. Time does not heal, but it does make loss more bearable. Eventually. Stay strong and seek help if you think you might need it.
