Sorry, should have said a higher risk of injury, but you knew what I meant.

I’m not sure there really is, it would only be marginal. If the elite amateur players didn’t want to take that risk then they wouldn’t have to.

I think there’s a far greater player welfare issue and risk of injury with going into games with 14 or 15 players

Taking point 4, do you think there is a risk of injury if an amateur player gets drafted into a match against full time team?

There’s always a risk of injury in the game but that’s why I said clubs should be monitoring the amateur game. I don’t see a massive difference between the top end of the amateur game and a semi pro squad player.

That's a generic answer though.  The point was about if it is more dangerous for an amateur player to be drafted in which of course it is.

I just feel that the although the rise of Toronto has brought interest to the championship, there is still a lack of appreciation about the difficult circumstances clubs have there.

I think the clubs are criticised if anything is not slightly right regarding the Toronto trips.

1/With City that wasn’t because they didn’t have the players. Rather a choice the manager made as the youngster coming in wouldn’t be used anyway. Probably a way for Pep to let the owners know he needs more money for players.

2/Squad numbers aren’t unlimited but pro clubs especially semi pro should know the amateur game inside out. I’m pretty sure there are plenty of amateurs who would sign a 4 week contract with the chance of a free trip to Toronto thrown in.

3/As you say clubs are spending too much on the first team and not having enough cover. Clubs need to either have bigger squads or have a plan as to were they can get players from. Either DR or loans or the amateur game.

4/Do you not think there is a serious risk of injury to the player that took part. With the position the club has put them in.

I like watching Man City so I have to admit I was aware of the issues of point 1 ☺

However Pep himself said "He hadn't enough players" for the Burnley game.

I agree with point 3 in particular.

About drafting in amateurs though it is not a good solution as they dont know the players or team moves and there would be Health and Safety issues.

My team travel to Toronto next month and are well organised and have an efficient chairman. As said before it is injuries that are the problem.

It isn't socialism because every owner has agreed to this as a condition of participation in the league and owning a franchise.  The NFL isn't 32 different clubs, it's one giant entity with 32 shareholders.

The NFL is the most well run sporting organization in the world.  I think Rugby League would do well to adopt a Franchise system with a proper shared revenue model.

Realistically, the heartlands are completely tapped out and saturated.  You are never going to be able to support more than 12 fully professional sides in that region and continuing to run the game pretending teams like Barrow, Whitehaven, Dewsbury, etc are going to magically crack Super League standard is a foolish way to run a business.

Super League should separate from the RFL and form a franchised league.  New applicants can be entertained on a case by case basis.

It's a kind of controlled capitalism then - where even the greediest of bar-stewards accepts restrictions as long as they all make money. They are also pretty ruthless about booting teams (cities) out if they don't contribute. Something the RFL never understood when they tried it.

The small town mentality exhibited by some fans often extends to owners too - I'd be surprised if we ever saw a franchise model adopted and, more importantly, persevered with. You are right about the economics of the situation - the argument is really between which of the smaller towns gets to play in the big time. The answer really is - the ones who can put the most cash on the table.

A lot of fans can't cope with supporting a club playing in a competition that is appropriate to their wealth and circumstances against similar clubs. Also, going to sport in North America is a vastly different experience to going in the UK and it's taking time for people over here to understand that.

For Wolfpack to work they need to be in Super League, they need to get a better rhythm to their fixture list and they need a better coach.

Some amateurs are as good as pros and can easily manage a one-off game at that level. Otherwise we wouldn't let them play in the Challenge Cup.

I agree the standard is good but It is a different argument.

In this scenario they don't have the same regular intense training as their team mates and are not familiar with the moves or defensive strategies.

True - like some of the players who rock up on Dual Reg. Can DR players go to Toronto? Would the club have to get visas even if they don't know whether or not they are available?

I'm not asking you BTW - a general question. I will be interested to see who travels with Sheffield in July - it took months for Menzie to get his UK visa!

They may not be upto speed with attacking and defensive structures. Surely though it’s better than turning up short of players.

London won 58.22

Dewsbury pull one back 52.12

fax winning 38.12

Toulouse 48.14

Does this adds fuel to the argument for SL1 & SL2 as full time divisions option?
