With the best, thats a good bit of PR, though I would say the Bedford team, theres, like, you know, 13 blokes who can get together at the weekend to have a game together, which doesnt point to expansion of the game. We had a peat fire down in the Falklands in late-2012; 2 PARA used tracer rounds on the bone-dry training area resulting in about 60 sq miles being burnt. It took 3 weeks to get it out with the vast majority of the garrison and FIDF on duty putting the damn thing out; massive, dangerous and back-breaking work. We called in the fire mission and then had to call in a fire fighting mission! Thankfully we got it before it properly took off and they’ve excellent plans in place for such a thing so it was just a long day for us to put it out rather than longer. Never really told anyone this but a week after we put the fire out, I went along with the South Atlantic Commander to blow up a load of bar mines the Engineers needed to get rid of. Well the boss blew up the mines but the shrapnel inadvertently set of loads of tiny fires in the peat. A massive panic ensued as the Commander (1*), Chief of Staff (Gp Capt), the Station Warrant Officer, myself and half a Platoon of Sappers desperately tried to put them out before we burnt another 60sq miles of East Falkland... Can smell the smoke as far away as Manchester city centre. Must be a nightmare to deal with as the terrain really isn't compatible with the job they have to do. Just hope there are no casualties. Surprised the army weren't called immediately as the more people and equipment the better I'd have thought. Saintslass Posted June 27, 2018 Share Posted June 27, 2018 I spent the day in Southport today and there was a haze of smoke in the sky as I travelled there from St Helens. Martin Mere wetland centre reported they experienced smoke there and as that is not too far from Southport then it's not surprising I saw the smoke haze as I travelled. For those who had to evacuate it must have been very frightening to see so much fire moving so close. I feel for the fire fighters. It is incredibly hot in the north west at the moment - unusually so (32 degrees in Southport today - mercifully with a breeze) - and peat fires must be horrendous to deal with given that they can burn below ground. The heat for the fire fighters must be horrendous. I read earlier that the local communities have been providing them with water and food. I vote Green, so I'm minded to want to be on the environmentalists side. However (notwithstanding evidence yet to emerge) I really do think Monbiot's gone off prematurely in this case. Ainsdale nature reserve near Southport. About an acre of pine forest has been burnt. Fire now out but apparently will take about a week to douse all the hot spots.
