Homes being evacuated -

No rain forecast for a while too.

With the best, thats a good bit of PR, though I would say the Bedford team, theres, like, you know, 13 blokes who can get together at the weekend to have a game together, which doesnt point to expansion of the game. Point, yeah go on!

I’ve had personal experience of a similar situation. We had a peat fire down in the Falklands in late-2012; 2 PARA used tracer rounds on the bone-dry training area resulting in about 60 sq miles being burnt. It took 3 weeks to get it out with the vast majority of the garrison and FIDF on duty putting the damn thing out; massive, dangerous and back-breaking work. Good luck to the firefighters (and Army lads) involved.

Only one I was involved with and it was at Otterburn. Live fire exercise in an unseasonably dry autumn. We called in the fire mission and then had to call in a fire fighting mission!

Thankfully we got it before it properly took off and they’ve excellent plans in place for such a thing so it was just a long day for us to put it out rather than longer.

Never really told anyone this but a week after we put the fire out, I went along with the South Atlantic Commander to blow up a load of bar mines the Engineers needed to get rid of. Well the boss blew up the mines but the shrapnel inadvertently set of loads of tiny fires in the peat. A massive panic ensued as the Commander (1*), Chief of Staff (Gp Capt), the Station Warrant Officer, myself and half a Platoon of Sappers desperately tried to put them out before we burnt another 60sq miles of East Falkland... ???

Quite near where I live and grew up, easily the worst moor fire I've seen in nearly 40 years. Can smell the smoke as far away as Manchester city centre. Must be a nightmare to deal with as the terrain really isn't compatible with the job they have to do. Just hope there are no casualties. Surprised the army weren't called immediately as the more people and equipment the better I'd have thought.

"surely they've got to try somthing different now, maybe the little chip over the top?2

I spent the day in Southport today and there was a haze of smoke in the sky as I travelled there from St Helens.  Martin Mere wetland centre reported they experienced smoke there and as that is not too far from Southport then it's not surprising I saw the smoke haze as I travelled.

For those who had to evacuate it must have been very frightening to see so much fire moving so close.

I feel for the fire fighters.  It is incredibly hot in the north west at the moment - unusually so (32 degrees in Southport today - mercifully with a breeze) - and peat fires must be horrendous to deal with given that they can burn below ground.  The heat for the fire fighters must be horrendous.  I read earlier that the local communities have been providing them with water and food.  I hope they are getting shelter too when they have their rest breaks.

George nails it...

"Could" doing an awful lot of heavy lifting there..... apparently the fire is in a "no burn" area mandated by English Nature on land owned/managed by the RSPB and United Utilities.

Hobby horse jumpers of both sides seem to want to leap to conclusions. At the moment, the one thing it *doesn't* look like given the land ownership is anything to do with grouse shooting.

Without taking sides at all, https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-manchester-44648348?SThisFB includes the line from the Professor of Applied Biology at Liverpool University:

"United Utilities and the RSPB didn't think a big fire like this would happen to them but I've been predicting this for 15 years.

"Leaving the land alone causes much more damage than controlled burning because there's more heather to burn so it gets hotter and spreads to the peat, which in turn spreads the fire.

"It wasn't a matter of if, but when, and that when is now."

The professor at some point was going to be right , only a 15 year wait .

I vote Green, so I'm minded to want to be on the environmentalists side. However (notwithstanding evidence yet to emerge) I really do think Monbiot's gone off prematurely in this case. I know it's fast falling out of fashion but however noble the cause I do tend to want there to be evidence rather than mudslinging!

Yep.  Ainsdale nature reserve near Southport.  About an acre of pine forest has been burnt.  Fire now out but apparently will take about a week to douse all the hot spots.  That will probably be idiots having BBQs in the woods.  It's a lovely little spot.  But now with the exception of about an acre.

Fire brigade have withdrawn from Winter Hill as conditions are too dangerous.

Hope you keep your TV signals!

Thanks BR - amazing really seeing the biggest landmark from my childhood on fire... got stuck in a bog up there once as a 7-yr old! Looks the TV tower won’t last...

The winds pushing it away from Winter Hill.  And no one wants to lose their TV when the world cup is on.
