SL Club Attendances 2018

Recommended Posts

2018 experienced a drop in attendance numbers. If I was in media, the click bait title would be "RL in crisis as attendance numbers plummet". However it is only a modest slip, but not a trend the game can absorb for too long. Total attendees have dropped 6.4% over the past two years. The 2018 list is below

Leeds 12,807
Hull FC 12,175
Wigan 11,773
St Helens 11,479
Warrington 10,088
Catalans 8,354
Castleford 7,848
Hull KR 7,965
Huddersfield 5,721
Wakefield 5,244
Widnes 4,898
Salford 2,966
Magic W/E 64,319
Total 1,178,800
Avg 8,542

To be real about this Salford's 3K average is just not good enough. Any Super League Club averaging under 5k is obviously not doing something right.

Totally agree. Sadly they will stay in SL and continue to under perform on the terraces. Even Widnes has dropped below 5k now.

Not sure why, surely with the local population base, they are one of the SL teams with the most potential for growth. Maybe they just need new direction and ownership. What support do they need from other SL clubs to achieve this? Perhaps they should have got the 500,000 that was ###### away on Leigh last year.

To be fair a part of the drop has come from Leeds (understandable in their situation.) Salford and Widnes obviously have poor crowds but overall they’re only down around 600 from each from two years ago.

Toronto could improve this slightly if they come up for Widnes or Salford. London would have a devastating impact as not only have their crowds historically been terrible, they’re often the lowest home crowd for every other team. Toulouse would also probably struggle when they’re not playing Catalans and i’m not too sure of their ground situation for next year. Long term we could do with a strong Bradford.

Is there anywhere these statistics go back further? I know wikipedia do but i’m not sure how accurate they are. I know this year Wakefields is completely wrong.

picking on Salford when the attendances of the 3 clubs above them are equally as shocking is ridiculous.

You're kidding right? Widness has a population of like 60k, Salford has 250k (not to mention the rest of Manchester so close by)

By the numbers, Salford should be ashamed of their attendance.  Reduce tickets, make the game day experience more enjoyable and fill the seats.

First up the answer is yes.

The comment on 'completely wrong' I'm unsure of what you meant. The data here comes from reputable sources, although they can vary even in such a case. I know some can tell crowd attendances from photos, not even necessarily showing much of the crowd. However, I can assure you that wasn't how these figures were arrived at.

Well, come on then, what’s the drop? That only shows this year’s attendances and nothing more.

The link to a site goes back three years. If you want to go further, see the link on my comment above.

That's worrying, especially from the 'big' clubs. I think one reason attendances are down is due to the amount of games we play. If you miss Saints V Wigan on Good Friday it doesn't matter because they'll play again at least another2 times.

Wigans decline is worrying and I would have expected more at Saints the way they have been playing recently.

Totally agree on both points.

Not sure on Wigan's issues apart from the possibility they haven't been as entertaining under SW. Could also need to try harder.

Perhaps Saints are close to saturation point unless they try other ways to broaden their reach. Often clubs do so much, then seem to think that's it and hope success will draw in more supporters.

Sorry if I wasn't clear, I meant wikipedia's figures are wrong for this season. That's where I was previously comparing the figures. Thanks for the more accurate links.

Thanks for the clarification. No prob with the links. Do you have a link to where more accurate Wakefield data can be sourced?

My plan was to make  comparisons at the end of the year but my only figures were from  the 2018 Super League wikipedia page which currently has Wakefield's average as lower than their seasons lowest attendance. The figures you provided look accurate to me so that's saved me having to look at each match individually, thanks again!

Also it's encouraging from the older statistics that the game, at Super League level anyway, has actually grown over the last 20 years. That's not really the impression you get from talking to most fans.

There has been real gains in that area, but the recent drop needs to be addressed before it becomes an issue. I wonder whether the clubs look at how they are promoting themselves and always seeking ways to do it better. In any industry, retaining existing customers but also chasing new ones is vital to long term survival.

I'm not sure there is a single club there that achieved anything more than acceptable.

The fact that Hull KR replaced Leigh and the average still fell is a worry. Although I guess the Headingley work will have had a big effect too.

If you look at the link the biggest drop is Leeds.

Aside from the fact they've had a shocking season, half the stadium has been getting rebuilt too - so to still be top of the pile attendance wise is incredible really. Leeds will be just fine, but worrying figures for the bottom 4 and arguably Wigan and Saints.

A lot of the fall is due to the ups and downs of various club's fortunes plus possibly the impact of the dreaded Thursday night Sky game. The real worry has to be the effective collapse in support for Salford and the continuing decline at Wigan (16% down on last year) who averaged 14195 in the last winter season. I know that this is a heretical statement, but I do wonder whether this is about the best level of support we can get, after all the Dark Side's club gates aren't much different and perhaps there's a limited market for games the require more than one brain cell to understand!
