What year did barrow league start? Also does anyone have final league tables for all/any seasons with play-off & league cups scores? I am trying to compile a record of community rugby league . Or does anyone know where this info may be available from.

I have the four Cumbria Rugby League Annuals (82-83, 83-84, 84-85 and 85-86) produced by FIM (Foster, Irving & Mumberson). Each has those stats for the Barrow League, if you're interested.

Many years ago in the mid to late eighties we went to a Barrow amateur club in the cup and lost.I think the changing rooms were in the middle of a big public park? They  had a massive second rower called Clough who had played pro at Barrow? Can anybody  tell me which team it was?My memory is going due to old age.

You will struggle sorry. We’ve asked the league in the past for winnners of the various cups over the years and it seems even the league don’t keep records.

I think 1977 was when the league reformed. When BARLA first started they merged the Cumberland and Barrow leagues into a Cumbria league then separated them again after a couple of seasons

Could it maybe have been Corporation Combine (now Hindpool Tigers) they played games at Tummer Hill which was just a load of pitches with a changing room. Can’t think of anyone who played in the park.

Railway Club or Marsh Hornets maybe. Both played at local playing fields rather than having their own ground.

I have seen an old team mate at the Thornhill versus Fev Lions game this afternoon who says it was Dalton ARLFC shawy13!The big lad is called Dave Clough who was a legend in Barrow rugby in the Eighties. Thanks anyway as it was a over 30 years ago and  the memory fades so I probably got it wrong?

I was going to say Dalton originally when you mentioned Clough but I don’t recall them ever playing in a park. Maybe you had a few too many on the way home that day ?

The Barrow league and Cumberland league did not merge Bowes. Some of the Barrow clubs and Cumberland clubs got together to form the Cumbria league. The Cumberland league still exists today and still refuses to accept Barrow clubs because Barrow was in Lancashire until the early 1970's. As the numbers dwindle with interest in the game on the decline they may well have no alternative but to merge in the near future.

I'm not sure about that Kev, but if they mirrored the professional game in those days - it was a separate competition.

The West Yorkshire Sunday and Yorkshire leagues used to play 1 v 4 and 2 v 3 with the winners playing in the final.

Yes Marauder quite a few leagues had a top 4 play off back then but just like the premiership trophy in the semi-pro game back then it was a separate competition - not to decide the champions. The list of previous champions is always the team that finished top of the table, not the team that won the top 4 play off.

They were also a separate competition mate, in the RLC we'd play 1 v 2 winner into the final and the loser would play the winner of 3 v 4 with the winner of that game playing the winner of the first game (highest placed team in each game would have home advantage)

Not sure where you get "still refuses to accept Barrow clubs" from.

The Cumbria Mens League and the Cumberland League are / were basically ran by the same management (and clubs) and its been tried more than once to have a county wide competition.

The latest effort lasted three years from 2013 -16 when Barrow sides Walney Central, Barrow Island,Roose Pioneers and Ulverston all entered.

I believe the costs and travel involved are the main reasons a Cumbria / Cumberland League has not been succesful .

If you have ever travelled the A595 coast road or tried the Lakes route in the summer you may have more idea of whats involved for the clubs to play in a county wide competition.

My wife, from Surrey, particularly enjoyed the ludicrously narrow stretch between Kirkby and Grizebeck during a week's holiday in the Furness area. "This is an A road?" she asked, looking about as baffled as I've ever seen her.

You won't find any record of any Barrow teams in the Cumberland league. They played in the Cumbria league. I have travelled the coast road many times on my many trips to watch amateur RL in Whitehaven and Workington just to avoid the boredom of going the same route up the M6 every time. One time I decided to watch Wath Brow play Crosfields and looking at my map I decided that I would take a short cut round the top of lake Windermere and over the Wrynose and then Hard Knot passes. I recommend that everybody should try this route - you will never want to do it again!
