I started collecting results from about 1987 but previous to that I had to take the names of the previous winners off the cup its self and there are many gaps. I had to make an appointment to go and see the trophy as it was held at the time in Manchester Police headquarters at Chester House. I believe it's in Salford town hall now. In recent years it was too valuable to insure the actual trophy to be awarded and a replica was awarded. The competition has been allowed to die now anyhow. Westmorland never had as many population centres as Cumberland (in 1911 the county's entire population was less than 64,000), probably a factor in the former, historically, having fewer 'rugby' clubs. In The Roots of Rugby League, Trevor Delaney says in 1897-98 the Ambleside, Holme, Kendal, Kendal Hornets and Kirkby Lonsdale clubs all switched to the Northern Union. He adds that by 1906 there were so few non-Northern Union clubs in Cumberland and Westmorland the two counties' respective Rugby Unions decided to amalgamate. Sufficient Westmorland NU clubs for a Westmorland Cup? To muddy the waters further, there was such a beast as the Cumbria Cup (sponsored for a time by BNFL), contested by Barrow, Carlisle, Whitehaven and Workington. It was a decent trophy, as I recall. Still is a Cumbria cup and still contested by both Barrow and Cumbria league's, probably still the best comp to win however the conference teams don't enter the comp or enter second team's which I find very disappointing. I don't know when it started but the amateur cup was for player that had only ever been amateur i.e. no ex-professionals who had returned to their amateur roots, or, as I understand happened for a while, played back at amateur clubs "under licence' from their professional club. From my experience it was the organisation running the competition who had the cup engraved. Celtic Rooster Posted August 22, 2018 Share Posted August 22, 2018 The Cumberland cup and the Cumberland amateur cup are two separate competitions according to the 1978/79 BARLA handbook. The amateur cup did not allow ex pros or permit players (Same with the Manchester League Valentine cup). The finals in the 1977/78 season were Cumberland cup Ellenborough 21 Egremont 15 and amateur cup Kells 14 Ellenborough 5. Egremont were the Cumberland league champions in 77/78 but the top 4 play off was a separate competition and Kells beat Egremont 19-9. As I have said before Barrow teams do not compete in the Cumberland league or it's cup competitions because Barrow was in Lancashire until 1972. The Barrow teams played for the knock out cup back then and this seems to have become known as the Barton Townley cup from the 1984-85 season so, my guess is Barton Townley is the name of the sponsor. At the same time the 'A' team knock out competition became known as the Harry Warman cup. The Cumbria cup was not implemented until the 1982-83 season and this included Barrow teams.
