As I was taking the Knockout Cup back today I took a list of winners off it for you. Unfortunately not all clubs have gone to the effort of having it engraved but this is what’s on it.

The latter years this will be ‘A’ teams that have won as first teams moved to NWC/NCL leagues

If if you are interested I will see if I can go look at the other trophies and get the info that’s on them. Unfortunately not many are in our cabinet this season.

Can’t believe teams can’t bother to get their name on the cup! They work hard enough to win it.

Is the same with the Manchester League Valentine cup - one of the oldest and most valuable trophies in Rugby League. I started collecting results from about 1987 but previous to that I had to take the names of the previous winners off the cup its self and there are many gaps. I had to make an appointment to go and see the trophy as it was held at the time in Manchester Police headquarters at Chester House. I believe it's in Salford town hall now. In recent years it was too valuable to insure the actual trophy to be awarded and a replica was awarded. The competition has been allowed to die now anyhow.

Cumberland and Westmorland were Counties for many years before Cumbria was dreamed up.

Bit of a history & geography lesson for me here! Don’t tell me there was a Westmorland cup also? Why amateur cup? To bring more to grass roots?

Interesting to ponder whether there was a Westmorland Cup. Westmorland never had as many population centres as Cumberland (in 1911 the county's entire population was less than 64,000), probably a factor in the former, historically, having fewer 'rugby' clubs. In The Roots of Rugby League, Trevor Delaney says in 1897-98 the Ambleside, Holme, Kendal, Kendal Hornets and Kirkby Lonsdale clubs all switched to the Northern Union. He adds that by 1906 there were so few non-Northern Union clubs in Cumberland and Westmorland the two counties' respective Rugby Unions decided to amalgamate. Sufficient Westmorland NU clubs for a Westmorland Cup?

To muddy the waters further, there was such a beast as the Cumbria Cup (sponsored for a time by BNFL), contested by Barrow, Carlisle, Whitehaven and Workington. It was a decent trophy, as I recall. Anybody know about the history of that competition? By the late 1980s, the Cumbria Cup was a pre-season tournament, with two semi-finals and a final.

Still is a Cumbria cup and still contested by both Barrow and Cumbria league's, probably still the best comp to win   however the conference teams don't enter the comp or enter second team's which I find very disappointing.

Some of the fictitious scores in the RLC we're for fictitious teams who never even crossed the start line at the start of the season, it was a ploy to boost the numbers of teams and players for sports England to gain a greater amount of funding, once the RFL got caught out with this, they ( sports England) reduced the funding,  another ploy was to count any player who played winter and summer as two players.

Shame they got caught out because the extra funding was doing a good job with development officers around the country.

They do. I'll add them shortly. May as well let everybody see them. Might jog a few useful memories!

The four FIM annuals also carry Carlisle & District League tables/results, if you're interested.

There was a fifth Cumbria Rugby League Annual, put together a few years later by a Whitehaven-based freelance (FIM - Bruce Foster, Alan Irving and Graham Mumberson - were all Cumbrian Newspapers, now CN Group, employees). Sure I have a copy somewhere in the loft. I'll see if I can locate it.

I’m interested in Carlisle & district detail from the annuals when you get time please

When did the Cumberland amateur cup start? Does anyone have a list of finals? Why was it needed, when there were Cumbria & Cumberland cups?

I don't know when it started but the amateur cup was for player that had only ever been amateur i.e. no ex-professionals who had returned to their amateur roots, or, as I understand happened for a while, played back at amateur clubs "under licence' from their professional club. Ex-pros could play in the Cumberland cup

Just because I don't know doesn't mean I don't understand

I would be interested in lists of Cumberland/Cumbria cups amateur cup. League/divisional cups & top 4 trophies also. For Cumberland/Cumbria/barrow & Carlisle leagues also! Not cups that were open cups not connected to the league. What Cup is the list above?

From my experience it was the organisation running the competition who had the cup engraved.

Carlsberg don't do Soldiers, but if they did, they would probably be Brits.

Looking at your table,Wath Brow left the Cumberland league and joined what was called the Cumbria Superleague in 78/79 winning it that year and finishing runners up to Millom the following year before returning to the Cumberland League the next season due to the amount of travelling up &down the coast road as they were the only team from Whitehaven/Workington in the league.

The Cumberland cup and the Cumberland amateur cup are two separate competitions according to the 1978/79 BARLA handbook. The amateur cup did not allow ex pros or permit players (Same with the Manchester League Valentine cup). The finals in the 1977/78 season were Cumberland cup Ellenborough 21 Egremont 15 and amateur cup Kells 14 Ellenborough 5. Egremont were the Cumberland league champions in 77/78 but the top 4 play off was a separate competition and Kells beat Egremont 19-9. As I have said before Barrow teams do not compete in the Cumberland league or it's cup competitions because Barrow was in Lancashire until 1972. The Barrow teams played for the knock out cup back then and this seems to have become known as the Barton Townley cup from the 1984-85 season so, my guess is Barton Townley is the name of the sponsor. At the same time the 'A' team knock out competition became known as the Harry Warman cup. The Cumbria cup was not implemented until the 1982-83 season and this included Barrow teams. Prior to that Barrow teams and Cumberland teams entered the Lancashire cup.
