Pitch markings at Lamport Stadium

Recommended Posts

First time I've had a view of the ground was the Sky showing yesterday. One thing I noticed was the soccer markings on the pitch, all in a different colour so as not to cause confusion, however- why does the ten YARD soccer centre circle touch the 10 METRE rugby lines?

In dual use stadia there is always a gap between the circle and the 10 metre lines, since metres are slightly longer than yards. Am I wrong or is the Lamport pitch marked out in yards and not in metres, as per the laws of the game?

Are you Rod Studd? How do you get confused? The RL lines are white the others are different colours.

I didn't get confused they're different colours. However, if the markings are done correctly, the white rugby ones ten metres either side of centre shouldn't touch the ten yard soccer centre circle. Far from hard to spot if you look.

Someone on the match thread said they’d turned off the game because of the lines ?

makes you wonder if some of the members of this forum actually like Rugby League

There was a touch of irony watching the Toronto game last night as a Huddersfield fan, the idea that the BBC nor SKY show the Giants is that our home games "show the game in a bad light" and "not a good look for TV audiences"

So imagine how it looked to see loads of different coloured lines on a plastic pitch and a game played out to a backdrop of half empty concrete stands and people stood around with little interest in the game as if they were at a dinner party.

And this from the club that a lot of people will claim is the 2nd coming of the game, and the club to end all clubs etc.

I actually turned it off after 25 minutes as it was beginning to hurt my eyes!

If the stadium is council owned and other sports play at the stadium you've got to expect other sports pitch markings .

Probably makes the stadium viable for the council to run .

4 G pitches makes the playing surface multi use , weather proof , its all about making the facility viable over the year .

Everything is bigger in North America, including yards.

I've watched Toronto on TV numerous times and must admit that had never dawned on me. If it's true then it'll certainly need correcting.

On a slightly separate note, I'm with Man of Kent, it does look bloody awful, and despite the different colours, it can confuse for brief moments when watching, particularly after a camera change as you are just getting your barings. It would project a bit of an amateurish image of our sport if we were to see that in our premier northern hemisphere competition next season, which doesn't help when you are trying to win over new followers.

I wouldn't be overly critical of Toronto about it, they had to find an appropriately sized stadium somewhere in the city and I'd rather have them playing in Super League with those markings than not at all, and as tenants in the stadium, they are no doubt limited as to what they can do about it.

In terms of potential solutions, there are a few towns in the UK whose pro/semi-pro clubs in different sports share a stadium with a 4G pitch and they have been able to simply paint on and remove markings for each game in the same way it is done on grass. I presume it requires some kind of special paint or removing solution or something, I've no idea, but they manage it somehow. Widnes was one such example till the football club moved recently.

The problem with that as far as Toronto are concerned is that the existing markings appear to be of a non-removable nature so you'd probably have to relay the pitch, or at least the top surface, which I imagine won't come cheap, and is money their landlords are unlikely to be eager to spend.

Would they sanction it if Argyle was willing to fund it? If so, is there a long enough period without a game there in one sport or another to get it done during the RL off-season? Probably, i don't think it takes all that long. Would he be willing to pay for it?

Only he knows, but it would be beneficial to the image of both the sport and the Wolfpack if it could be remedied.

The pitch has just been relaid, which is why the Wolfpack played so many away games at the start of this season.

Comparing a club situated within walking distance of the birth of the game 123 years ago to a club seemingly trying to deliver a transatlantic club, despite the sport itself continually throwing #### it's way, just about sums it up for me.

I assume you watched the Salford v Widnes game with no beggar there and were completely satisfied with the pitch markings?

I was reading something about the Sheffield Eagles club NOT being able to brush the snow from the surface.

Certainly not viable for the year.

If a topic's not about Huddersfield, we need to make it about Huddersfield.

Given how many so called 'professional' heartland teams have got still got sloping, uneven, shortened etc pitches I reckon we can cope with a couple of extra yellow lines that don't look quite right

This is true, some pitches are on the side of a hill and eg Boltons ground is too short for a rugby pitch.

Every school gym in the country has multiple coloured markings on them.

On this subject -- the off side line was once 3 yards then 5 yards then 10 yards. 10 was more than enough, too much for my taste. But the dead hand of metrication and conformity then went and made it 10m ie 11 yards.  This is far too much.

Markings were not a problem in my eyes the RL lines were clear as day.

I'm sure some of them were for lacrosse which is big in Canada.

You are missing the point though.

I found no real problem with the different sports markings - as I said in the original post, they are clearly in different colours, so cause no problem - unless you're colour blind , of course.. The crux was that the rugby markings seem to be incorrectly done. We all know that grounds vary in their external, or outer, markings, but the internal ones, 10 metres from the goal line, 10 metres from the 20 and 10 metres either side of the centre line are expected to be just that. 10 meters. That's why a 'short' ground will have a much smaller area around the thirty metre mark and isn't just divided up into 5 smaller sections.
