Wembley Crowd

Recommended Posts

That article is from 1992 and it reads as though it could have been written today. The same references to accusations of bad marketing and hopeful expansion of the game. For example, it talks about "the declared ambition to be 'truly national' in time for its centenary in 1995" and how this wouldn't be attained. It still hasn't been attained, and it's now 2018. Has any real progress been made, or is it a case that it was never a realistic aim in the first place?

Point really well made by Dunbar re aggregate crowds at the major events. If you also add in the trips to France (and Australia) which never existed in 'the good old days' , the crowd figures are reasonable when evaluated in this context.

Probably unrealistic, remember even in Australia Rugby League is not a genuinely national sport in the way that cricket is and that is despite the inestimable advantage of being the most popular football code  in our biggest and third biggest cities.
