Kenny Edwards - hostility & referees are the main differences between NRL and SL

Recommended Posts

I don't think anyone at Catalans will too impressed with Liam Moore tonight whether it's Edwards or not.

Not having the forward pass judged by the VR never looked more wrong than tonight. The two last Saints tries were from the most blatant forward passes. OK the ref got it wrong but the system is in place to put it right but procedure prevents it. Just not good enough.

RE the Leeds game, they (Catalans) were absolute w######s for the last 15 minutes going down every tackle. Edwards himself was a significant culprit involved in it and jeered at the fans both during and after the game. Finished in one of the most hostile atmospheres I've ever been in at a Rugby match and Mr Edwards was a key part in creating that. Clearly he forgot that as Headingley is under construction the teams have to walk out basically with the fans round to the cricket pavillion. He was a prat - doubt he was spat on, not surprised they were intimidated.

He said it himself, he played the Villain down under, he's just getting called out far more often on it now. Welcome to European sports mate, I hope Catalans don't get Red Star Belgrade away in the cup he'll get PTSD!

Cry me a chuffing river!

Not sure if he played the Villain down under, only if by villain he means disappointing his teams fans.

He certainly played the dumb mistake and was a penalty machine, he was guaranteed to try and offload the ball in impossible situations or just plain knock on a couple of times a game.

Talent is secondary to whether players are confident.

His behaviour towards the ref yesterday was appalling as was that of ine or two ither Catalan pkayers. Moore looked like he was zig zaging away from the Catalan players sfter the full yime whistle to avoid more stick. He should have binned a couple of players for dissent.

Having been at the game last night I can only feel sorry for the referees nowadays. Damned if they do, damned if they don't. The use of technology does nothing to help them in the event of a suspected forward pass. Why not? Then when the crowd are shown the video playback on the big screen all this serves to do is embarrass and possibly frustrate the referee and incite the crowd to the point that the referee and linesmen need a a security escort off the pitch and need to avoid the objects hurled their way. A change in certain players attitudes can go some way to help start preventing these scenes!

Whilst I will never condone ANY undue actions by RL supporters, one has to ask if Kenny Edwards has taken a step back and thought about this statement:

"RL player with conviction for domestic abuse and several illegal acts thinks spitting at people is disgusting".

Just sayin'...

Unfortunately that's under the control of the TV director and not anyone officially attached to the clubs or the RFL.

Which tells me that the two need to get together in orders to discuss their moral obligations towards, and for the betterment, of our game.

Edwards' opinion of referees is probably also judged on his sending off at Wigan as well. He tackled Bateman late after a kick though, it was a late tackle and it was a penalty. The sending off of Edwards was just about as wrong as it could be.

Wigan won 25-20 and I like a lot of Wigan fans thought our team would not have won if Edwards hadn't been sent off. Basically they lost the game due to the referee getting it wrong.  Catalans lost the game v Saints for the same reason just different circumstances.

Maybe if they weren't in the referees ear from the first kick off they might get a bit more leeway. Bird and Edwards in particular were cretins the entire game last night and it's difficult to feel any sympathy with players (Catalans or otherwise) who are pretending they've been shot in order to con the guy they're criticising. The spectacular sudden onset of cramp manoeuvre is becoming a particular highlight.

This was evident in the Warrington Hudds game on Friday night.   This is not a dig at Hudds in particular - as they played the referee like all teams do when they know they can get away with it - but there were a few repeated sets late in the game with Hudds camped on their own line.   At every goal-line drop out the Hudds players (think it was Tai’i in particular) would refuse to get up and retreat behind he goal line.   James Child was at fault, he spent almost 30 seconds at one point repeatedly telling a ‘tired’ player to get up and retreat.   No penalty though, which just reinforced the message to all the players that the referee isn’t in control.
