cars you have owned that would now be classics

whenever you go to a classic car show a lot of it is nostalgia - even cars from the 80s such as capris xr2s Austin metros are lining up to take their pride of place, looking at the prices some of them are fetching I wish I had wrapped my Talbot sunbeam up  in the garage every night and treated it like an investment but as usual it never got looked after and was just another victim of the vultures at the scrapyard - some of you must be thinking the same

Never owned a car myself, but my family owned a variety - everything from a bubble car (Isetta or Heinkel) to a big Volvo Amazon estate that took us all across Europe on family holidays.

My mum used to have an Austin Seven, which made her regular journeys between London and Edinburgh quite an epic trek!

I've had a couple that would possibly now be classed as classics:

1957 Land Rover Series I 

1960 Ford Popular

1982 MG Metro Turbo

1986 Volvo 244 (built like and drove like a tank)

Ford Fiesta (can't remember the year, but it was an early one)

Austin Mini X 2 (1000 and 1275)

When I was in my late teens/early 20s I had an original mark 1 Ford Escort RS Mexico. They go for between 35 and 40 grand now.

The one that stands out for me was actually my dad's. Iwas about 24 when he got a cortina mk2 1600gt. A brilliant drive but it needed re-tuning every month. It didn't last long.

My own favourite was a rover 2600s. It had been slightly modified to run on low-profile tyres, but it gripped the road really well and I felt really confident even when I took it above 100mph. Forgive me your Honour.

Still have fond memories of the exterior, at least. The styling was cribbed off the original Chrysler C300, so it didn't look like the origami-style Volvos of succeeding years. The interior was a sea of beige vinyl, though.

Can't remember my first few cars (old age!) but I remember being totally in love with my Renault 17 with the gear stick on the steering column.

Wish I still had my dad's Ford Prefect though.  The rear window had a little roller blind, the wipers were absolute rubbish and the indicators were little arms on the side of the car which were meant to pop out but invariably didn't until we banged on the inside to force them .  Bet that would be worth a shilling or two now.

Peugeot 205 CJ at university - so much fun, especially given I was in Devon and heading off to the beach at every opportunity. Still regret letting it go now and I sold it in 2003.

Can i do bikes ?

 

I had a Suzuki GT200X5 in canary yellow they are worth a bit now, and I have in the garage a rather tired Gpz900r A1 which is one of the earliest uk ones (for those not into bikes it is like Tom Cruise rode in TopGun - except his was the 750 as his feet couldn't touch the floor on the 900), wife has one of the earlier T509 Triumph Speed triples as well - both that and the Gpz are/will be classics

 

I also got a FS1-e of my brother in law for £50, he had had it since 75 when it was 2 years old, i used it as a winter bike about 10 years ago for a couple of years but then it just got too tired and the parts had got silly to find or afford as they had become collectable - I sold it to a local bike shop who got the mechanics to restore it during quiet days and it is now in mint condition and worth north of £4k

 

Cars wise I only bothered with a car test when i was 28 and about to be a father. When I was young we had all sorts of weird cars though including what was badged as a 1600e MkII Cortina but actually had a Diesel in it, and a Ford Zodiac

Ours was Sh*t brown (sorry Saluki Bronze) with the paint pealing off the boot like all the E&F reg ones (some issue in the paint shop those years), it also had the little chequer stripe down the side

If any survive that long. Alfa's of that vintage are notorious for falling to bits. 

I go to quite a few car shows with my dad and he laments as he sees basically every car he had from the age of 17-30 (hes had more cars than hot meals) in mint condition and worth a bomb.

Problem is all of those had been locked in a garage somewhere and turned over every few months. Most of them are 30 years old but rarely have over 50k miles on the clock.

£4k for a FS1E, wow!

Wish I'd kept hold of my FS1E DX which, when I was a proud 16 year old owner, was the dog's; generally considered by the little "fizzy" gang to be the finest example of Japanese 50cc motoring there was in our little town (I'd fitted an after market sports faring in black to complement it's canary yellow).

At 17 I graduated to a Suzuki 250 GT, the last before the X7. Very quick for just a 250.
