The Dons put in a spirited display but were beaten 30-18 by Workington Town in the Betfred League One play-off semi-final.

Richard Horne made two changes to his starting XIII, as Jason Tali and Connor Scott came into the line-up.

Workington thought they’d made a perfect start to the game after two minutes, as Scott Rooke crossed in the corner but the referee pulled play back for a forward pass in the build-up.

It was the Dons who went on to get the first try, as Liam Harris got on the end of a knock-back from Sam Doherty to go over.

Richard Horne’s side extended their lead six minutes later, as Matty Beharrell converted a penalty goal to make the score 8-0.

That sprung Workington into life and they responded with their first try when Gordon Maudling took advantage of a free play to dive over in the corner.

The visitors went in front after 24 minutes, as prop forward Oliver Wilkes stretched over the line from close range.

The Dons came close to scoring when Ross Osborne powered his way through the line, but the former Hull FC man was denied by a combination of a post and some desperate Workington defence.

Town managed to extend their lead before the half-time interval, as scrum-half Carl Forber kicked two penalty goals to put the Cumbrian side in control at the break.

HALF-TIME | Doncaster RLFC 8–16 Workington Town

The Dons reacted well after the break and scored within four minutes of the restart, as Aaron Jones-Bishop managed to get an offload away for Brad England to spin his way over the line.

In an end-to-end game at the Keepmoat Stadium, Workington struck the next blow when Tyler Dickinson created space for himself and powered over close to the sticks.

They extended their lead further just short of the hour-mark, as the ball bounced in Town’s favour and into the path of winger Joseph Hambley, who had the time and space to touch down in the corner.

The Dons got their third try of the game when centre Jason Tali collected a loose ball and raced 50 metres to score, despite pressure from Town full-back Tyllar Mellor.

They came close to adding another in the few minutes after that, with both Tali and Russ Spiers halted in their tracks by good Workington defending on their own line.

Forber added more gloss to the score-line in the final minute, as he kicked another penalty goal to set-up a play-off final clash with Bradford Bulls.
