London Colonials RLC 1978/9

Recommended Posts

I am sure that we played away at London Colonial in the Barla cup but I am sure it was later than that. If I remember right we played in a small athletics arena and went back to a pub cellar  that was used as a club house. We won but not sure by what score and I am sure it we were made to play Sunday.  Rose Bridge  being my club, sorry to be a buy vague but only going off memory. If anyone will no more  info it be Celtic  Rooster he has most games logged.

In the 1978-79 season London Colonials lost in the first round of the BARLA national cup 8-22 at Victoria All Blacks. I'm not sure if Victoria All Blacks were based in Batley? In 1979-80 they were drawn away at Ovenden (Halifax) but conceded the tie. In 1980-81 they went out in the first round again 6-14 at Keighley Albion. The first time London Colonials got a home draw in the national cup was 1981-82 when they lost at home to Woolston Rovers 3-19. In 1982-83 they were drawn away again and went out 3-20 at West Hunslet. Their first victory in the national cup came in 1983-84 when they defeated Bradford side Clayton 14-10 at home before going out 6-16 at Thatto Heath. In 1984-85 they got beaten 20-23 at Culcheth Pack Horse. They got a bye to round 2 in the 1985-86 season before recording their first away win in the competition 12-6 at Milnrow, before losing at home 18-32 to Sutton Oak (St. Helens). In 1986-87 they played a fellow London club in round 1 and defeated Fulham Travellers at home 38-10 then lost at home to Batley Victoria 8-18. In 1987-88 they won away at Huyton Hornets 26-10 in round 1 before losing 4-10 at Stelrad in Hull. In 1988-89 they went out in the first round 12-22 at Wigan St. Judes. Colonials appeared in the preliminary round in 1989-90 and beat another Batley based team - Firths Furnishings 28-6 at home then, they drew Knottingley/Kellingley Welfare (Castleford) at home and for the first time got a second win against a club from the "heartlands" 24-21. Staincliffe (Dewsbury) became a third northern "scalp" when they lost 10-14, taking Colonials into round 3 for the first time where Woolston Rovers eliminated them 10-0 in London. In 1990-91 Colonials travelled to Eccles and won a first round tie 18-12, then won home ties against Punch Bowl (York) 42-16, Knottingley Rockware (Castleford) 20-10 and Pointer Panthers (Castleford) 39-12 to reach round 5 for the first time. They drew away at Cutsyke (Castleford) 6-6 but lost the replay at home 14-17. In 1991-92 they started in round 1 with a home win over Roose (Barrow) 18-6 before going out 5-17 at Lock Lane. The first "no show" against Colonials came in round 1 of the 1992-93 season when Prince of Wales (Castleford) failed to turn up in London but Colonials travelled to Crosfields in the second round and went out 4-32. Colonials didn't get passed the first round in 1993-94 - losing 12-18 at Runcorn. They should have made their Challenge cup debut that season too but forfeited an away tie at Blackbrook. In 1994-95 they beat Todmorden at home 22-4 but went out at home to Redhill 12-24. In 1995-96 they defeated Haresfinch at home 34-14 before losing 4-44 at Widnes St. Maries. Colonials biggest away win in the North came in the first round of 1996-97 winning 64-13 at Hoyland Vikings (Barnsley) then they progressed when Upton & Frickley failed to show in London before going out 20-34 at Lock Lane. They finally made their Challenge cup bow  this season as well - losing 12-33 at Redhill. I don't see London Colonials in the national cup in 1997-98 and I don't know if this is the same team but West London Colonials failed to show for a Challenge cup tie at Charleston Knights in Hull. London Colonials got a bye in the preliminary round of the national cup in 1998-99 when Gateshed Panthers didn't travel to London then beat Normanton Knights 18-16 at home before losing 2-38 at Millom. Rose Bridge won at London Colonials in the first round of the BARLA National cup 34-26 in the 1999-2000 season.

Hull Dockers played the colonials in the national cup , went a couple of tries down early in the game .

Managed to win the game late on .

Think the ground was near the Thames , loads of planes fighting over head .

Was late 80s early 90s not sure .

Go with celtic roosters info , my memory is rubbish !!

I will look into that for you when I get a chance Henage but I don't have time right now. I don't see much of London Colonials in the major competitions after 2000. London Skolars had started to become the dominant team down there by then, but in the 1980's and 1990's teams like Fulham Travellers and Ealing regularly played in the BARLA National cup. Maybe it was one of them that you played, or London Skolars? Streatham Celtic also played in the national cup in the 80's. I will look into that as I have more time on my hands now the current season is over.

Played against London Colonials several times. They were based at, I'm pretty sure, Hurlingham Park, which was  a great ground just south of the Thames. Can't remember a running track but there was a tidy stand there. Probably didn't play until 1980 so may have missed Aussie Paul! Played for Streatham Celtic, happy days!

We played at Hounslow near the airport a lot which was Ealing’s ground. Other teams were Oxford uni., Reading uni., Mc kenty at walthemstow, Peckham, I think Milton Keynes was in it as well. There was a southern league rep side that some of the ‘colonials’ played in. We went to Doncaster once and got hammered. A fellow by the name of Alderton had the idea of forming a ‘Colonial’ team for the 1978/9 season. I happened to be the first bloke to turn up with an English  player from Ealing who went back to the Ealing team.

Yeah we played at the Lapwing ground near the airport which was used by Ealing. McEntee was a school in Walthamstow and Peckham used to play at Herne Hill Cycle arena. The 'Alderton' may be the legendary Gordon Anderton. He was from Yorkshire originally and he did a hell of a lot for the game in London back then. Our first season in the league was around the same time as Hemel first started, and we also played Fulham Amateurs who were always a feisty bunch! And I remember Peckham Pumas who were formed from youngsters leaving Peckham Manor school (including I think Andrew Mighty who played for Hull), they became South London and a Kiwi version of the Colonials. Had some cracking players.

Thanks Celtic Rooster, you are bringing it all back to me. The memory is a bit rusty. Do you have anything on the 79/80 season as I was Capt. / coach of the team. We were sponsored by Pickfords removal firm. They employed some of us and the London manager was a league fan.

South London Warriors (or was it Wanderers). I played for them in the late 80s when Andrew Mighty joined before he went up north. We even had part of a season in the north west counties league. Most of the team were Kiwis and a great set of lads. The big games were against the Colonials. Then back to the pub and locked in the cellar at sunday lunch closing with a bucket in the corner for a toilet.

Sorry mate, I can't find Southern league tables for 1979-80 but members of the Southern Amateur League were Ealing, Hendon, London Colonials, McAntee, Milton Keynes (I played there in 1987), Oxford University, Peckham & Reading University. Colonials secretary is listed as D. Shaw. telephone 01 659 5917!

Gordon Anderton was the man who made things happen around London,I think he even used to referee too. Absolutely a top bloke who had time for anything and anyone who could promote amateur RL in the south. He wasn't a fan of the professional set-up at Fulham though.

Another big wheel back in the day was Bill Goodwin at Peckham. He had a few Streatham & Croydon RU players he could call upon which was a dangerous thing to do in 1980 as Union players caught playing League faced a lifetime ban if rumbled. S&C were a big club back then running a dozen teams. Bill went on to coach Kent Invicta when the spectacular expansion was taking place in the early 80s and then managed the Southend spin-off. Anyone know what happened to him after that?

I'm pretty sure I watched a night game under floodlights between Colonials and Peckham, around 1981. Would that have been at Hurlingham or the cycling stadium at Herne Hill? I remember it was played during a monsoon and I was watching from the warmth of the pavillion behind glass.

Portsmouth Polytechic had an occasional RL team in the late 70s too.

I thought Ealing played on Clapham Common? I caught a couple of games there in the early 80s. Maybe they used more than one facility?

I remember Hemel starting up. Down to the enthusiasm of a guy called Bob Brown who had previously been a basketball aficionado. That was an unlikely success story back then. Goes to show how things thrive and prosper when an individual devotes time and energy to a project.

Do you have all of these on a page, Celtic? Years ago, I did a comprehensive list of American soccer teams and their leagues season to season and would like to do the same with the Southern leagues when I have the chance.

I don't have all the Southern leagues in separate files mate. They are with all the other leagues season by season. The cups are all in files separate from the league tables too. If you let me have an e-mail address I will attach files you want to an e-mail and send it to you. Let me know exactly what you are after mate. Bare with me because I am not too clever with computers! I have tried attaching files to this page before and can't get it to work.

It was always a ‘full’ season from end of September to April but teams weren’t allocated fixtures every week due to the number of available referees.

If I remember correctly, Colonials and Souths’ fixtures started after the other teams, not beginning until they had all returned from the Oktoberfest - where they did a bit of recruiting!

Gordon continued to referee well into his sixties, getting to matches on the other side of London by pushbike. His contribution to the game in London was immense.

Thanks Celtic Rooster for a trip down memory lane! I played several of those seasons with Streatham Celtic (it was us, Pigeon, that played home games on Clapham Common). Gordon Anderton administered, reffed and even played for us once when we were short! A genuine RL hero. Bob Brown was the driving force behind Hemel when they were a bunch of guys struggling with the basics of the game. I know they've got their critics now but I'm not sure many people realise how far they've come, under Bob's stewardship, since the 1980's. The seasons were pretty short in terms of games played as a lot of the guys, as mentioned, also played Union. The Southern and I think London Leagues were Sunday morning Winter leagues. A lot of us played Union as well, but even though League was generally the preferred option, Union had such a strong infrastructure that a lot of guys prioritised Union commitments. It may also be worth mentioning that our coach was one Tim Butcher, who went on to be a founder of League Express.
