Hetherington insists Leeds’ strong Academy IS their reserve team

Recommended Posts

Nobody bans reserve teams.  If enough clubs think they are the best way forward surely they would be running reserve teams now.

Is it clubs championing reserves or others. If its clubs then as per first sentence how come no reserve team competition.  I assume not enough clubs think reserves are that important.

If reserve teams include academy players, is the academy competitions impacted?

Clubs who run a 1st Team, Reserves & Academy are better off as they are allowed to sign 75 Players......

Clubs with only a 1st Team are allowed a max of 40 players.

Clubs running a 1st Team and academy are allowed 65 Players.

Makes clear sense to have all 3.

Why is having 75 players better than having 65?

No wonder a shortage of players if 75 per club....

Because it's advantageous to pick a matchday 19 from amongst 75 Players than amongst 65 Players, especially when injuries and suspensions come into consideration....Whilst at the same time denying access to 56 Players to rivals rather than just 46.....

The next best 19 available players out of the remaining 56 Players would then be your 2nd team aka reserves.....

The next best 19 Players out of the remaining 37 Signed to the Club would be your 3rd team aka Academy side. These would all have to be Academy eligible players though. (U19) of which a club is allowed a maximum of 30 out of the 75.

He is proffering a valid model... that’s works at s club that can vacuum up all the best talent as it emerges through the age groups ....  Leeds do this but are not transitioning the young talent into the adult world of RL

the NRL does this superbly

and they operate with a reserve grade structure, that is competition, club and culture congruent...  kids get their first taste of playing against adults in reserve grade ... and it’s invaluable!

Leeds Rhinos chief executive Gary Hetherington believes the Rugby Football League do not have ‘anywhere near enough’ knowledge to make a decision on whether to reintroduce reserve rugby – and says the case of Luke Briscoe proves there are merits to the existing system. Reserve rugby is high on the agenda once again after Wigan declared they were considering scrapping…

Looks More like a massive Dual Reg system with the exception of the Dogs, NZ Warriors, Knights, Penrith & Dragons though.....

Looks like but isn’t...

there is is no promotion for the teams that play reserve grade level...

and The alignment is at core level... coaching structure team ethos etc

ps the dragons reserve grade play as Illawarra cutters based in my home town... dome 60km from the st George home base at kograh

Queensland structure is more like DR, with the QCup teams being a lot more seperate and the Queensland NRL clubs having arrangements with multiple clubs (ie. Cowboys have Cutters, Blackhawks and Pride)

For NSW, it is very much a Reserve Grade. Look at the Roosters - North Sydney arrangement, currently Roosters coach, Jason Taylor, will run the Bears squad, plus still have some roles back at Moore Park.  This is the same for Wentworthville (Parramatta), Blacktown (Manly), Mounties (Raiders), Newtown (Cronulla), etc - all have staff which are contracted to the NRL team.

It would be like Leeds employing part of the Fev coaching staff.
