I think it was a Dewsbury v Saints cup game game when it all kicked off, A saints player (Warlow?) was getting belted so the landlady from his digs ran on and gave the Dewsbury lads a handbagging. Something like that, although I'm sure a Saints fan of a certain vintage will have more

Is that skerrett? Always remember the widnes fans hated him and he got no end of abuse from our lot, mainly for being a dirty bar steward iirc

It is, he was, but he was also a brilliant footballer. There was a lot of rugby brain in that brawn.

The Rugby League Digest

That's fantastic. Can't work out what's funnier, the woman joining in or the fella being dragged by his collar.

That could just as easily be a scene from an episode of Benny Hill as a game of Rugby!

Here is a great image from the UK in 1966, of Miss Minnie Cotton, aged 57, remonstrating with players in a brawl against her beloved St.Helens.
After being removed from the field by police, Miss Cotton said "I'm thoroughly ashamed of myself, I'll never do it again."
Several weeks later she had to be escorted off the field again by police for hitting an opposing player with her shoe.

Jam Eater  1.(noun. jam eeter) A Resident of Whitehaven or Workington. Offensive.  It is now a term of abuse that both towns of West Cumbria use for each other especially at Workington/Whitehaven rugby league derby matches.

It's a good book that with some excellent photos but unfortunately with the usual Aussie trait ofa massive amount of errors about the British game from wrong players, wrong clubs, wrong grounds, wrong years I think I lost count somewhere in the 30s.

Belter that mate. Not sure I recognize anyone though. I was at Salford Uni 93-96, we had a decent team then. I missed out on the squad but we had craving players, Jimmy Evans (Swinton), Dean purtill (Leigh), ginger lad called Dave who was on Warringtons books at the time. Plus a couple of Manchester doorman as ringers? always tasty against Cardiff. Leeds had a cracking side too.

You have just reminded me... this was more like 1990. I played twice for England Students and the second time was 1994.

In my defence, it was a long time ago.

Best one I ever saw isn't on here. Apesi Toga for Rochdale Hornets v Swinton. He's bursting through two Swindon tacklers whilst trampling another one under foot.

I think it came second in a poll of sporting photographs one year about 1966. A pub I used to go in had a life size copy of it as you walked in the door, very scary.

Toga was a great Fijian forward who went back down to Aus to play for Saint George and died tragically young in his prime.
