This pic is courtesy of Rochdale Hornets RLFC 1958 - 1964 Facebook page. It's the 1958 Challenge Cup tie between Hornets V Bradford Northern at Rochdales old ground the Athletic Grounds. What caught my attention was the size of the crowd.

Thanks Pj - a reminder of my age and the days of crowds of which we Hornets diehards can now only dream. I seem to recall we had a similar “full house” for a cup tie against a Barrow side full of ‘star’ players.  I was fortunate enough to be able to walk to the ground (over the Rochdale canal) - on too many times, it seemed a much longer walk home!

My pleasure sir. I did manage visit the Athletic Grounds when I was a teenager twice in 1979 (I've just looked it up in a book of Wigan records & stats!). The first time the game was called off due to the atrocious weather while we were in the cafe/bar (I think it was called the Hornets Nest?). The second time was for the rearranged game about a week later - which felt like it was even colder! Wigan won 6-2 (according to the book), but it was so cold I was just glad to get back on the coach! Good luck to the Hornets.

Careful with that walking on water, one day you will forget where the stepping stones are?

I really liked Kevin Ward, one of the best imports to the Australian game of all time.

He looks like he is wearing one of those Sumo suits in that photo :-)

Talent is secondary to whether players are confident.
