I'm strongly in favour of kids in the UK playing in weight grades rather than by year which just encourages 'just give it to the big, fast lad who has grown quicker than the others, to plough a furrow from a to b' rugby. But that then pleases the screaming parents on the touchline. Playing in bare feet though....although I agree with the sentiments in the article re tackling etc, we'd be evolving kids with webbed feet in the UK! I was a popular stand man myself so could see the income loss to the club at first hand. A casual observer got an 80% view of the match for free from Central Park Way. Still a more than decent paying crowd though....
M j M
Moore Park before the SFS. Bottom to top: Sydney Showground, venue of the first RL game in Australia and the early home of Souths. Sydney Cricket Ground, home to Grand Finals (1908-1987, 2020, 2021), venue of more top flight games of RL than any other ground in Australia. SCG No 2, backdrop to many a vintage RL training session photo, not sure what RL was played there but some must have been. Sydney Sports Ground, home to Easts (1911-1986). I went to the speedway at the Showground also known as the Royle back in the 80s and at Liverpool raceway out in the western suburbs too.
