Damien Posted July 3 Posted July 3 Liverpool footballer Diogo Jota killed in car crash: Diogo Jota killed in car crashpublished at 09:40 British Summer Time Portuguese footballer Diogo Jota has died in a car crash in Zamora, Spain, the Guardia Civil confirmed to the BBC. His brother, Andre Felipe, also died in the crash, which happened at around 00:30 local time (23:30 BST). The car, a Lamborghini, left the road due to a tyre blow out while overtaking another car. The car set on fire, and both are confirmed to have died. Whatis it about Premiership footballers who want to buy the fastest cars on the planet? You'd think they'd be extremely concerned to preserving their huge salaries and reduce the risk by driving something sensible every day. There must be a fair chance that the two of them would have survived a similar tyre blowout in a Range Rover. Under Scrutiny by the Right-On Thought Police

The Hallucinating Goose Posted July 3 Posted July 3 That's a horribly sad thing to read about. I feel so sorry for his family. 1

It really shows the great gulf in wages between football players and other sports doesn't it? You'll get a championship footballer driving round in a Ferrari, and a Super League RL player driving round in a 20 year old Corsa..!

Until we hear anything to the contrary this sounds like a tragic accident that nobody could've foreseen. Edited July 3 by hunsletgreenandgold 2

So tragic, he was only 28 and just got married. Leaves behind his wife and 3 kids. 2

If you read the live updates on BBC says it says that the Spanish Guardia have announced, the tyre blew on his lamborgini while overtaking another car, which caused him to lose control, crash and burst into flames. His brother was also killed. It happened in Zamora. Edit. In fact, just read what @Damien has posted above. Edited July 3 by The Hallucinating Goose

I know the detail - I'm suggesting that drawing conclusions about the car that was being driven and potentially how it was being driven is premature. Whether it was a Lambourghini or Fiesta, a tyre blowout could've caused the same. And seems insensitive to pose 'what is it about PL footballers' like this was some huge risk he was taking - we know nothing beyond what is in the public domain, all of which points to this being a tragic accident rather than anything reckless. Gerrumonside ref Posted July 3 Posted July 3 It’s devastating news and a real shock as a Liverpool fan to lose a player so young while still playing for the club. I’m glad the tributes are emphasising that he was great in character as well as his footballing abilities. Its hard to believe it’s happened so soon after getting married and that he leaves behind young children. RIP Diogo. 3 1

I think it just highlights how freakish accidents can happen at any time, no matter what precautions you take. Younger men in general have a carefree attitude when it comes to alcohol, partying, driving, women, you name it. No one enters a car thinking this might be the day their tire blows out. I think of how many times you see egregious speeding on highways to overtake, and 99% of the time it doesn't end in a horrific crash.
bobbruce Posted July 3 Posted July 3 I think Jota wanted to fly but was told he couldn’t by his doctor after surgery. So was using the car to head to the ferry I’m assuming to head back to Portugal. Too early to speculate too much but he’s the last person you think of as a flash premier league player. An out and out family man. Very sad for his parents who have lost two sons and his new wife and three children. RIP Diogo. 4
