Five best bands of the rock and roll era (1955-2019)

Recommended Posts

Here are the five most popular and talented:

The Beatles

The Rolling Stones

Eagles

The Beachboys

Fleetwood Mac

Obviously The Beatles are number one. The order of the others is a matter for debate. Any disagreements?

When you say 1955-2019 you really mean 1955-1979 as everyone after 1979 is a copy of variant of what went before. This is reflected in your choices - I would consider putting The Who in the list, probably Led Zep (although I'm not a huge fan) and T-Rex. For something different, The Clash. The only Americans I would have in the list are Springsteen & The E-Street Band.

"I am the avenging angel; I come with wings unfurled, I come with claws extended from halfway round the world. I am the God Almighty, I am the howling wind. I care not for your family; I care not for your kin. I come in search of terror, though terror is my own; I come in search of vengeance for crimes and crimes unknown. I care not for your children, I care not for your wives, I care not for your country, I care not for your lives." - (c) Jim Boyes - "The Avenging Angel"

Unless the criteria for selection can be quantified it can only ever be a subjective list.

"talented" is not something that can be measured on any agreed scale, similarly "influential"or "best"

Most Popular is a snapshot and doesn't account for differing circumstances. One Direction will have had a massive number of downloads and Youtube views, the Beatles and Michael Jackson will have sold loads more vinyl. Who is more popular?

On record sales as a measure of popularity Abba would have to be in the list. However, I suspect that that would be anathema to rock fans. But they would certainly fit in as a band in the 1955-1979 category

I think that this is a good list as all of these bands had more than one creative influence and different vocalists. They also have longevity.

The only other group challenging would be Queen?

If its 5 favourite bands of that period I will go for; Springsteen & E Street Band, The Clash, U2, Midnight Oil & Foo Fighters with honourable mentions to Counting Crows, Steve Earle & the Dukes, Crowded House & Talking Heads.

I'm basing that on live shows I have seen hence Crowded House & Foo Fighters being in there.

Obviously this is massively subjective, when I was younger I used to say “xxxxx are ######” nowadays it’s just that they don’t move me at all. If music is anything it’s (not my quote) “a vehicle for expressing passion.”

Its whatever does it for you, you don’t have to and probably can’t “prove” anything here

As Phil has said my view will also have changed by tomorrow. But today I'll throw these into the mix.

Captain Beefheart & The Magic Band, Jefferson Aeroplane, Cream, Frank Zappa & The Mother's, and Joe Cocker & The Grease Band.

Agreed!

The Beatles seemed amazing to a four year old seeing them for the first time. Before that I'd been a fan of The Shadows.?

After listening to the voices of the people, I have decided to revise  my list to include the inestimable Queen at the expense of Fleetwood Mac. The new top 5 in no particular order (except for The Beatles number One):

The Beatles

The Rolling Stones

Eagles

The Beachboys

Queen

. . . .

Honourable mention:

Fleetwood Mac

The Kinks

The Who

Crosby, Stills and Nash

Chicago

The Police

Of those five I only liked the Stones and the Beach Boys.

George Harrison and John Lennon solo were good but for some reason I only got into the Beatles in the Let It Be and Abbey Road years.

My other top three would be The Who,The Kinks and the Hollies from the 60s.

It s not. Black music was ripped off by white artists with hardly any acknowledgement.

I cringe when I listen to programmes such as Tony Blackburn s 60s chart show when most of the British records played were covers of the much superior originals.
