Junior Refereeing abuse

Recommended Posts

Why would anybody want to be a ref if you get that week after week?

With the best, thats a good bit of PR, though I would say the Bedford team, theres, like, you know, 13 blokes who can get together at the weekend to have a game together, which doesnt point to expansion of the game. Point, yeah go on!

Unfortunately this is wide spread across all levels of the game and not unusual with this level of abuse. Having referee'd close to 300 matches at all levels of the game,  knowing from personal experience, the junior leagues are by far the worst, and often no punishment (As in this case) are handed down to the offenders.

This issue needs to be taken more seriously, with one solution having league representatives attend matches at clubs who have had reports of abuse against them.

According to YJL twitter feed they say the matter is being investigated. You obviously don't see the YJL discipline sanctions that are sent to clubs, often coaches and spectators are given 6 or 12 months bans from games

who enforces the bans?

afew years ago a junior coach i know was banned for abuse to a junior ref. i went to watch his team play and he was on the touchline shouting and balling but that day the ref was an older more experienced guy who stopped the game and told him in no uncertain terms the game wasnt about him and the game would be abandoned if he continued.

so surely if  the league has teams/players/coaches/spectators whos been in trouble surely it makes sense to do random spot checks or send a league official to games but not broadcast it just turn up?

rather than fining teams for not having correct colour vis vests on or sending in a result 10 mins late

I gave up reffing juniors many years ago because of behaviour like this

I found that if the parents, had a previous involvement with the game they weren’t too bad, but those who knew nothing about it were awful.

I’d finally had enough when I reffed a local junior final and walked two players from the same team. The parents were stood next to me and calling me a cheating **** as I was collecting my medal. Enough of this I thought.
