The big question is can Walters be the man to get that improvement.  Nothing I have seen in his coaching career to date suggests he is.

I think that team is a much better team than last year showed. Sounds like Siebold overcomplicated things and they lost confidence. They arent a top 8 team but I dont have them bottom this year. Maybe Walters more simple approch will help? Maybe not though. One thing I like is that hes got some of the clubs ex great captains back involved. For a young group, having those guys around the club should help things.

I watched him on NRL 360 yesterday and boy he was unimpressive . What pleasantly surprised you and the opposite when you came in to the job .... well I had a great office and , err , we were bottom last year which wasn’t good . We need to do better . Really inspiring

You don't think that's about saying nothing that could blow up into another negative headline about his players, after 12 months of getting slammed?

I kept expecting them to get better last year (and kept tipping them). It wasn't just the defeats, it was the style of the defeats... they were far too soft from 1 to 13 but especially in the middle.  If Walters can improve that (and it is more attitude than ability) then they will improve.

I did think this myself. Especially when they asked him what an acceptable position  to finish would be. Hes hardly going to turn around and say "top 4". He was diplomatic, plus it always takes a while for teams to bed in with a new coach.

I love Haas, Pangai JR and Flegler. Lodge goes well too. Theres literally no reason why they should have been that soft. To me it all came down to Seibold. 9-12 should be the aim for them this year and then move on from there. Once you get into that 3rd quarter it makes the next step forward much easier.

Thought Farnworth looked very good this morning. Especially when he was at left centre before Coates went off injured. He put Mead away 3 or 4 times and handled everything that was thrown at him too.

I agree, I thought he looked really good.  Strong in both attack and defense and putting his winger away is not something we saw a lot last year so very encouraging.

Was surprised that Burgess wasn't used more at the start of the Souths vs. Melbourne game... he tended to be the lead runner in almost every play.  The one thing Burgess gives Souths is momentum and they badly lacked that in the first half.  Anyway, hope his shoulder injury is not too bad.

Herbie goes bananas

I can sense how desperate you were for him to have a good game so you could get this line in.

Thought Williams looked good and Sutton too. Dom Young put his winger in with a worldy of an offload in the NSW Cup, hope he gets a shot at the NRL later in the year.

Sutton always puts in a shift when he plays. Think he was the best forward on park for metres too. Should keep him in the team for a bit anyway

Worldy is indeed the right way to describe that offload (0:15 in the link above). What has really impressed me is in both the trials and that first reserve grade game he's shown his ability and intention to put away his winger. Without having seen much of him before coming across I was apprehensive he may be reliant on his size and running game as such a big kid but he's already demonstrating that is not the case.

Bradman Best is under an injury cloud heading into this week so if he's ruled out I wouldn't be surprised to see Young named in the 21 man squad (Shibasaki is still likely first drop to take Bradman's spot).

Edit: Rumours now that Star To'a could also be ruled out. Dom could end up getting a run earlier than previously anticipated.

  • 2 weeks later...

Gold Coast are ready to exit the race for Brandon Smith and turn their attention to landing England rake Daryl Clark for next season after the Melbourne No 9 indicated he was ready to honour the final year of his deal at the Storm.

Clark, a former Super League Man of Steel, is under contract at Warrington but it is believed he has been given permission to sound out clubs about a switch to the NRL.

The Titans have made no secret of their desire to land a hooker, having made Smith their No 1 priority. However, it appears Clark is the more realistic target as Smith prepares to remain in Melbourne.

The Weekend Australian was told that the Titans were ready to table an offer to Clark, a player coach Justin Holbrook knows well from his time in Super League.

Clark has made no secret of his desire to try his hand in the NRL. Canterbury have also expressed an interest in the 28-year-old as they seek to address their issues in the No 9 jersey

They have also actively pursued Smith, as has Brisbane. Clark now appears the more realistic option and the Gold Coast look to have stolen a march on their rivals as they attempt to address one of the few shortcomings in their forward pack.

Would be great if this comes off - at 28 you'd think Clark can't leave it any longer if he wants to have a decent stab at the NRL. I reckon he'd go great if he did.

If he was to go, Holbrook would be an excellent choice of coach to work with. He'll be more than familiar with Clark's abilities and style.

More than that, the Titans are a club on the up and they have a formidable pack which he’d thrive behind. Hooker is definitely a weak spot for Gold Coast though, which he’d be ideal to rectify.

I hope he doesn’t go to Canterbury, that would be a backward step

The thing that has pleased/impressed me is that none of the English players who are over here or the Aussie players who have comeback have looked out of place, like Mead at the Broncos looks strong, Brayden Williame at St. George looked good yesterday and of course all the other blokes.

Makes me think the competitions aren`t that far off just perhaps a little in terms of intensity.

I`ve only seen one picture of Clark and he looks like one of those rangy players who are deceptively strong, really hoping he comes out it would be great to have another top-class foreign player in the comp.

Think of players like Fifita or Fa'asuamaleaui supporting some of Clark's darts from dummy half, and you can imagine a lot of damage being done.

Walters was hardly reaching for the popcorn. But amid the scrap, he would have been pleased with Brisbane’s defensive clean sheet and the slick performance of centre Herbie Farnworth.

The British utility back was dangerous, amassing 213 metres, six tackle busts and three line breaks as he carved up Canterbury on the edges.

At 21, the 100kg Farnworth is developing into a rangy attacking threat for the Broncos. Brisbane’s forwards should heed his hard running.
