Brits in the NRL

Oliver Gildart makes his NRL debut in round 1 and Dominic Young gets the nod on the wing for Newcastle.

Very surprised to see that Ryan Sutton only makes the reserve bench for the Raiders.  For me, he is miles better than Corey Horsburgh.

George Burgess hasn't made the game squad for the Dragons.

Sutton has just agreed a 3-year deal with the Dogs for 2023. It may just be Ricky testing Sutton to see if he will get a good year out of him.

Yeah I read that too. Seems a shame that it will be at the expense of Thompson leaving the Dogs however - would've been interesting to see them two play together. They still might, but everything seems to suggest Thompson will leave after this season - Wests or Dolphins most likely destinations.

Indeed . I know wests were mentioned but  Bennett may look at taking him after working with him internationally . May not be a bad thing for Thompson actually

Has he still got another year, after this, on his contract for the Dogs?

The Knights definitely see potential in Dom Young. Named on the wing for Round 1. Could be a break through season for him if he gets a good run.

Hymel Hunt's knee injury ended up being worse than first thought so his timeline for return is now 12 weeks, as a result Dom should have that period to establish himself in the side without fear of being dropped which should help his confidence early on (we don't really have anyone below that to feasibly oust him).

Unfortunately Bailey Hodgson is also out for at least 12 weeks, poor kid has had a terribly unlucky run down here so far.

Dom Young lives up to the hype in the Knights win over the Roosters, came up with some absolutely brilliant defensive plays on opposition winger Daniel Tupou and was a consistent threat in attack including a very high quality finish to seal the game.

His best all-round game in the NRL so far and clearly demonstrated that he's worked very hard on his game during the off-season.

Good to hear. Will watch the game later. That's a big win for the Knights and a strong performance against Tupou who has been consistently one of the best wingers in the NRL for several years.

Gildart was solid enough.  In the first half the Tigers had a number of overloads on his side and only executed on one as the edge forward took the ball too often.  Gildart had one chance to release his winger and did.

He showed a bit of decent footwork at times but he is noticeably smaller than many backs in the NRL.

Size and physicality looks a challenge for Gildart. He is a classy player but those carries out of defence were pretty meek. Made a poor defensive read too for the Storm's first try.

Any doubters of Dom Young now ? Absolutely outstanding

It is obvious the Knights have loved what they see in training and around the organisation with Young. They have not held back giving him opportunities. He is fast and athletic and carries well out of defence.

No Reece Lyne but exciting potential.
