John Bateman has signed a 2 year deal with the North Queensland  Cowboys.

Well done for getting this long running thread going again. I thought it was a shame when a 2024 specific one appeared for last season.

Yes, like New Coke, we can consider it a temporary diversion and now back to the original.

They’re offering Jayden Sullivan 900,000 grand to leave the club. The club is in absolute shambles.

He must be really bad, 900,000 grand is 900 million dollars, that's a lot to pay someone not to play for you.

So as the Brits in the NRL embark on another season it's time to get this going again. I think John Bateman needs a big season this year after a few years of not really performing to justify his big salary.

First time there hasn't been a Burgess in the NRL in 15 years by my reckoning! Some legacy that certainly paved the way for a resurgence of Brits to chance their arm in the NRL. That said, apart from maybe Young, of those who've come from the SL I think every single one of them needs to have a good season to still be there next year. Further to that, I could well see Pryce and Sutton (depending where he's at with his recovery) back in SL before the season is out.

George has been in the news though a couple of days ago at a nightspot.

Big beard, long hair and smoking nowadays.

Looked like he had been in a good paddock for awhile

An actor now isn't he? He was at Sam's wedding end of last year and he looked like he was enjoying retirement shall we say.

So far, I have found out he played for Aussie club Helensvale Hornets as a junior.

He also won silver medals in three field events at last year’s under 18s national track and field championships in shot put, discus and hammer.

He also represented Australia in power lifting at the Youth Oceania Championships.

Looks a very good prospect.

he has a superb build for a loose forward, looks strong, fast and has great footwork going into collision also looks to have an appetite for the physicality.

well worth keeping an eye on him but he’s already expressed a desire to play for Australia

Not sure what you’re talking about here. Smithies and KPP are excellent players and in great form, they would have plenty of clubs paying big money to sign them if they were to leave their incumbent sides. Nicholson and Dodd are not going to be released if they have a bad season, it’s their first year at their new clubs. And Herbie ?, he is as English as every other English player, just because he wasn’t signed by a SL club does mean he isn’t a product of British rugby league. Not sure why you haven’t mentioned him.

If anything Dom Young is probably under the most pressure of any Brit in the NRL to maintain his spot.

Because I explicitly said 'of those who've come from SL' - which part of that did you struggle with? And you can kid yourself on all you want that Herbie is a product of British RL (whatever that even means?) but he's played all his academy and first grade games in Aus. Smithies and KPP both had okay first seasons - I hope they both kick on this year, but the idea clubs are lining up to pay 'big money' is laughable. And just to round things off - why is Dom Young, who scored 20 tries in his first season at the Roosters, 'under the most pressure'? You really do spout utter nonsense.

I agree with this - people are quick to forget he was dropped by the Knights before he regained his spot with some dazzling tries - with the Roosters having lost a lot of talent (to produce and assist tries ) then Young may have to do a lot more than just finish off slick moves this time round

Yet he still scored 20 tries in a injury started season in the top six for the NRL.
