ASEAN Super League: Eight team competition broken into two Zones. Central Zone features Bangkok City Bulldogs, Banglamung Broncos, Sattahip Storm and the Nonthaburi Knights whilst Mekong Zone includes Ubon Wild Bees, Mukdahan Blue Nagas, Paske Panthers (Laos) and Savannakhet Warriors (Laos) Central Zone Round One Results: Banglamung Broncos 42 - 24 Bangkok City / Sattahip Storm 34 - 12 Nonthaburi Mekong Zone Round One Fixtures: Ubon v Mukdahan (Sunday) / Savannakhet v Paske (TBC) Estepa-Elefante Cup: Third edition of the Philippines National Club competition has four teams, North Luzon Hunters, Cavite State University Tigers, Manila Storm and Clark Brothers. I was aware that the Mekong Fireballs were playing teams from over the border in the north-eastern region of Thailand, but three teams suggest there is some real development going on within Laos itself. Paske and Savannakhet sit on opposite sides of the Mekong to Ubon and Mukdahan and were chosen strategically to keep traveling to a minimum with the Zone. Savannakhet took part in last year's ASEAN International Nines in Pattaya, whilst Paske will be playing their first Games in this competition. The Mekong Fireballs are still around, but being based in Vientiane makes it a long trek to the Isaan teams. Hope for 2020 is to build a conference around Vientiane, with possibly Udon Thani and Nong Khai. Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai are the other region hoping to establish a conference next year as well. It all looks very promising. What I do like is that, in many cases, development seems to be very much linked with empowering some of the less prosperous communities; notably so with the women's initiatives. Let's just say the current people behind it have learnt from past mistakes... after all this certainly isn't the first attempt taking the code to Thailand. All clubs and the regional leagues are pretty much 100% locals. The 'foreign' element is the ASEAN Rugby League who is working with the respective Isaan, Eastern, Central, Lana and Laos Federation of Clubs, who is helping raise funds, send equipment and help find volunteers like Rodney Joyce, to run Development clinics, coaching, trainer and referee courses and so on. Now despite the then IRLF falling over, a number of those participants didn't fall out of love in the game, and now almost a decade later those players are behind the new NRL Indonesia Federation. The NRL Indonesia Federation will look to run a club competition this year as well as the International Nines in November. Poland set to tour the Philippines https://www.aseanrl.com/2019/03/28/poland-announces-tour-of-philippines/ Last year's ENWC say the Philippines and Poland clash in the tournament Trophy Final. After the match (which Poland won 14-10) both nations agreed to try and help each other out a bit more. Well this is Poland fulfilling their part of the agreement with a Rep team set to tour in October.
