Lenagan says he is supporting Hamlin through the process, although he’s now back in Australia.   I guess the support was a lift to the airport.

I liked Hamlin when I first saw him as he played well above his weight.   Maybe now we know why ?

All part of the 'Wigan Way'. One of the most irritating things over the last few years is the insistence that the club has a high standard for discipline. We've had Bateman and Mossop's brawl, Joel and Sam's boozy bar staff horror show, Hardaker's drink driving, Mullen's drink driving and now Hamlin's drugs suspension. Plus the often overlooked (because no one had really heard much about him) drug ban for Rhys Pugsley.

Despite the claims to the contrary, there isn't a great culture at the club.

He was administered an amount of dope above the level at which it can remain undetected? ?

you can micro-dose, get significant measurable improvements and still not get caught, certainly surprised most rugby players aren't doing a Wiggo/Chris Froome with doctors note for having asthma, not that it actually does any good to improve performance but it can help mask other things apparently.

Wigan's actions of standing by Hardaker and inaction following the John Bateman incident a couple of years ago make it really difficult for them to discipline players for off-field indiscretions going forward.

There certainly are a lot of off-field indiscretions lately, that they need to get a grip of.

What actually happened in the Bateman mossop incident or where can I find out?

Bateman lamped Mossop in a gym var park after apparently falling out at a day at the races no police didn't arrest them and no charges were brought, more's the pity!

A comprehensive investigation involving external judicial expertise has been conducted in the past two weeks by the Wigan club into an incident that took place on the 27th May 2016 involving two players.
As a result, John Bateman has been fined £10,000 and been banned from selection for games for eight weeks from the date of the incident. He will return to training during the period and will next be available for selection on 22nd July.
The judgement was reached after a disciplinary panel listened to testimony and evidence for a second time to ensure appropriate conclusions and actions.
Whilst this resulted in some delay, it was felt vitally important for both the players and the club that the correct judgements were reached.
Chairman, Ian Lenagan, commented:
“It is difficult to take such disciplinary action but we are responsible for the behaviour of Wigan players and the good name and reputation of Wigan Rugby League Club and all that it stands for.
“Disciplinary action needed to be taken and to be seen to have been taken.
“John Bateman has expressed his full regret at the incident, as have other parties, and the club will be working hard with John to ensure that he learns properly from the experience and comes back stronger than ever. He will remain a Wigan player and return to training during the period.
“Kris Radlinski and Shaun Wane are confident that the spirit and togetherness of the squad is at a high level, which has been illustrated by the fact that two difficult wins were achieved during the period of investigative distraction.
“The incident is now viewed as closed and no further comment will be made by club or players.”

And Bateman has developed into one of the best if not the best second rower in the world. A world cup player and current international.  He is certainly one of the best sought after. So much so that Wigan got a useful fee for him.  By all means dredge up what you want... but in 3 years since he has become a great player and Wigan made him so.  Are Wakefield on the rocks because of a 20 month ban on Adam Walker?  By all means list out all the other issues other players you like elsewhere and may be we can get a committed to score points.

There seems a real lack of discipline at wigan, the whole club is in a bit of a freefall.

By what measure? We are currently champions at first team, under 19s and women’s levels. We have the second best crowd figures in the league. Our junior development and engagement with the community are, behind Leeds, the best in the league.

As to recent issues, the salary cap issue resulted in a fine and no points deduction and Edwards’ issues are his own and union’s rather than a club problem. We will either keep Lam or get another great coach.

This is no more or less significant than any other drug ban, and certainly far less problematic than the behaviour of last year’s man of steel. This isn’t a Cronulla club wide investigation, this is an individual who looks like he did something weak, stupid and self destructive. He isn’t the first and he won’t be the last.

The Bateman issue was dealt with firmly and proportionately and the club helped develop him into the person and the player he now is. The Tomkins’ behaviour was awful and condemned by the club and now they both play elsewhere.

We are of course big news because we are a big club. Which is often a lovely way to be.
