Keighley or Warrington, who's the better team?

Recommended Posts

Here's a look at some random* results to answer this tricky question.

Yesterday, Keighley beat Doncaster 26-18.So let's say Keighley are an 8pt better team than Doncaster.
The week before Doncaster beat Batley 16-12. So through collateral form (8pts + 4pts) Keighley are 12pts better than Batley.
A couple of weeks ago, Batley beat Widnes 20-18. So Keighley are 14pts better than Widnes.
Earlier this season, Widnes beat Halifax 40-16. So Keighley are 38pts better than Haliifax.
In the Challenge Cup, Halifax beat London 24-16. So Keighley are 46pts better than London.
Earlier this season, London beat Wakefield 42-24. So Keighley are 64pts better than Wakefield.
Wakefield beat Salford 33-22. So Keighley are 75 pts better than Salford.
Yesterday, Salford beat Warrington 36-12. So Keighley are 99pts better than Warrington.

So we have the answer to our tricky question. The form book tells us that Keighley are clearly a much better team than Warrington, and could be expected to beat them by 99 points if they ever meet.

*(lest there is anyone who needs this explaining, the games may not have been selected totally randomly, and the point is to show how useless collateral form is, as well as highlighting to a degree the splendid unpredictability of the sport).
