Sri Lanka bombings

Recommended Posts

6 bombings (3 churches + 3 hotels).  Co-ordinated, so its probably a group.

To be honest I don't really know much about Sri Lanka and the situation there.  Aside from the war against the Tamils, and the increasing influence of China?

With the best, thats a good bit of PR, though I would say the Bedford team, theres, like, you know, 13 blokes who can get together at the weekend to have a game together, which doesnt point to expansion of the game. Point, yeah go on!

I have a Muslim Sri Lankan friend who has been growing increasingly angry at the government corruption. There has been a lot of civil unrest in the past year or so.

Beyond that ... not a clue.

Nobody has yet claimed responsibility for these horrific attacks yet.

There were suggestions of major corruption in connection to Chinese loans and ‘investment’.

Some estimates of over 150 dead.

This is terrible.  Christians are a minority in Sri Lanka at about 6% of the overall population but in Colombo they represent about 65% of the population.  The pictures of the devastation in the churches coming through now are just awful.  Presumably whoever has done this doesn't like foreigners either given the hotel attacks.  There are known to be foreigners killed and injured and our Foreign Office is seeking information on British nationals.

The 3 hotels were all 5-star, so inevitably there will be foreign casualties.

No confirmation on which group is responsible but the Guardian is reporting the following in their rolling news

Contrary to what the BBC reported (quoted in the previous post), AFP reports that an intelligence alert was issue earlier this month about a potential attack.

Documents seen by AFP show that Sri Lanka’s police chief Pujuth Jayasundara issued an intelligence alert to top officers 10 days ago, warning that suicide bombers planned to hit “prominent churches”.

“A foreign intelligence agency has reported that the NTJ (National Thowheeth Jama’ath) is planning to carry out suicide attacks targeting prominent churches as well as the Indian high commission in Colombo,” the alert said.

The NTJ is a radical Muslim group in Sri Lanka that was linked last year to the vandalisation of Buddhist statues.

Awful news which will fuel hatred on the other side like the NZ attacks. This is turning into a never ending cycle with no solution.

Whilever you have religion you will have hatred and war.

Whilst true to some extent I think if there was no religion you'd still have hatred and war. Greed, power, envy, hatred etc unfortunately motivate many people and wars would still exist.

I had a religious background but the more I hear and see as I grew up I saw religion more n more as the greatest irony in the world . Something purporting to be about love peace and harmony seems to me often to engender and be a platform for hate war violence bigotry and intolerance to others who have different faiths or denominations , and to be behind so many intractable trouble spots

Absolutely spot on. Religion is the label used by people to justify their real aim; to have power and control over people.

Yes. Religion makes a convenient hook on which to hang your tribal hat.

"I am the avenging angel; I come with wings unfurled, I come with claws extended from halfway round the world. I am the God Almighty, I am the howling wind. I care not for your family; I care not for your kin. I come in search of terror, though terror is my own; I come in search of vengeance for crimes and crimes unknown. I care not for your children, I care not for your wives, I care not for your country, I care not for your lives." - (c) Jim Boyes - "The Avenging Angel"

So in a country where 90% of the people are either Buddhists or Hindus, who's bombing the Christians?

I’d suggest old age and disease is far higher.

Yes well obviously , I was meaning essentially war and the reasons for them and murder , ie humans having reasons to kill other humans

I read there were warnings in Sri Lanka  10 days ago of an apparent Islamist terrorist plot to blow up churches.

If memory serves, the two world wars of the 20th century - ie the two biggest wars in that entire century - had nothing whatsoever to do with religion.

There's been plenty of other wars over the centuries
