Hemel Stags - Southern Conference ARL

Recommended Posts

A great day of rugby league at Pennine Way - Home of the Stags.

The day kicks off with a wonderful festival of mini rugby featuring the Stags and other clubs from the London & South East.

Then the day hots up with a London Junior League clash between Hemel & Richmond at U14 level to be followed by a terrific main curtain-raiser - Hemel Stags two Under 16 teams - the 'Blues' & 'Golds' - meeting in a London Junior League fixture  highlighting the pride of Hemel youth.

All of this is just a taster for the launch of our Southern Conference League season when the new-look Stags under coach Ken Kerr take on London Chargers.

There will be licensed bars and a full range of catering options available.

Gates open at 9.am and admission is FREE!

Hemel Stags

The Stags competed in Betfred League One between 2013 and 2018, finishing in 5th place on two occasions.

The club were formed in 1981 and, over the past 38 seasons, have competed in various incarnations of Southern and Eastern divisions before successfully applying for a position in League One.

Hemel play in a small enclosed stadium at Pennine Way, have seven secondary schools which regularly play the sport under their tutorship and have a healthy representation in the London Broncos Scholarship and Academy squads.

In possibly the standout tie of Round One in the new Southern Conference League, Hemel Stags will welcome visitors London Chargers to Pennine Way.

London Chargers

Based on Clapham Common, the London Chargers formed when members from South London Storm and West London Sharks joined forces in 2013 to create South West London Chargers.

The club would enjoy immediate success winning the London League and Harry Jepson Trophy consecutively for three seasons. A rebrand to London Chargers followed and that also proved successful as they won the Conference League South in 2016.

They have reached the Grand Final in every season since their inception and have played nine Coral Challenge Cup games in the past six seasons.

London Chargers will look to knock off the much-discussed Hemel Stags in the opening round of fixtures in the Southern Conference League.

27-April-19 The New Southern Conference Season Kicked Off with Hemel Stags hosting the London Chargers

A Spectator's View.

On a bleak, showery and blustery day; Hemel Stags looking resplendent in their new Kit took to the field, at the Pennine Way Stadium, to take on the visiting London Chargers. A tight and edgy contest in the first half gave way to the London Chargers pressing home their early advantage to win the day in the second half. Full credit to the players from both sides who really put in a good shift.

Really pleased to see the Southern Conference League up and running.

"Weekend Round Up"

Credit: Official Match Day Report from the Hemel Stags Website - First posted 28th April 2019

Rugby Festival 27th of April 2019

Saturday was billed as a big occasion for the club and it certainly lived up to expectations.

Despite inclement weather more than 200 mini players and supporters turned up early at Pennine Way for the first of the London Primary Festivals that saw matches played at U7, U9, and U11 level with the Stags having two sides in action at U9's and U11's

After this the day continued with London Junior League matches at U12's, U14's and U16s with the Stags' 12's and 14's  winning their matches against Eastern Rhinos and Richmond respectively. Pride of place went to the U16's when the club's two U16's sides played each other in a League fixture and turned on a fantastic display of rugby league, something that was to be expected given that the two teams had eight London Broncos Scholarship players on display between them. In the end the Hemel Stags Golds deserved their 32-26 win over Hemel Stags Blue.

All of this was a curtain-raiser to the launch of the Southern Conference League season with the Stags taking on the experienced London Chargers. A tense first half between the two sides saw the visitors go in with a 12-0 half time lead having scored a critical converted try on the stroke of half time. The second half saw the Chargers play the smarter rugby league and despite a converted Oly Toms try it was the Londoners who bagged the competition points with a 30-6 victory.

A great day at Pennine Way despite some very perishing windy conditions.

Eastern Rhinos

Eastern Rhinos are one of the oldest Rugby League clubs in the Southern Conference League, originally forming in 1992 as Felixstowe Eastern before renaming to the Ipswich Rhinos and, more recently, the Eastern Rhinos. Their latest rebrand came in 2010 to help consolidate their second team and youth teams under one banner at a new base in Colchester.

The Rhinos have been a mainstay in both the Southern Premier League and London Premier League in recent years being the only club to have competed in every season and making the play-offs on every occasion. Their last two captains have come through the Rhinos’ junior set-up and they now have a number of players contracted to the London Broncos Academy.

Excerpt from Round 2 Southern Conference League Round Up, by Golden Point RL

"Another side who haven’t picked up a win yet this season are Hemel Stags who after dropping out of League One were not expecting such a tough ride.

Eastern Rhinos picked up a 28-14 victory in Colchester thanks to tries from Dan Harding, Sam Evans, Adam Cook, Vilive Koroibanuve, Graham Atkinson and Ewan Banner.

Hemels points came courtesy of Gareth Swindells and Samuel Griffiths"

Southern Conference League - Round 3 - Eastern Division - Brixton Bulls 🐃 vs 🦌 Hemel Stags

11-May-19 at 14:30

Team Profile - Credit for Quote - GoldenPointRL.blog @GoldenPointblog

"Brixton Bulls were founded in 2004 as the only Rugby Leauge club in the London Borough of Lambeth. Originally just a junior club they have since grown exponentially and now run two men’s teams, a women’s team and four junior teams between the ages of 7 and 12.

The club is aiming to grow its junior offering in coming years by expanding their primary Rugby League programme to local schools and community centres whilst also hoping to further its offer to females wanting to get involved in the sport.

They have enjoyed success in the London Championship in recent seasons winning back-to-back titles in 2017 and 2018"

Philippa Robson‏ @dilps (One of the Coaches)

"London conference league game off due to injuries on Hemel's part."

Lots of disappointment on the Brixton squad ready to go for the double header.

Brixton women v the army... Off due to the opposition not having enough players. Gutted. We weren't ready but we were ready to give it

12th May 2019 - From the Hemel Stags Official Website - News Feed................

Weekend Roundup - It was a mixed weekend for the Stags in various competitions.

Saturday started well when a 57 seat coach containing Mini's, Under 14's, players & parents  departed Pennine Way; for a Rugby League Festival at Colchester, hosted by Eastern Rhinos. The Minis continued their considerable progress and did will against the three other clubs - Rhinos, Brixton Bulls and Medway Dragons.

The Under's 14's fixture against the Rhinos ebbed and flowed throughout the match and looked set for a draw until a last second breakaway try by the hosts clinched victory by 26-22. Competition leaders Hemel Stags Golds U16's travelled to bottom club Rutlish Raiders in West London and paid for fielding an under strength team by losing narrowly 28-26. Hemel U13's had little difficulty accounting for Elmbrige Eagles 54-14 at Pennine Way

Finally both the Hemel Stags Blue U16's fixture against St Albans and the Southern Conference Clash against Brixton Bulls were postponed with the latter likely to be played on 13th July.

From the Pre-Season Preview by "Golden Point RL" https://goldenpointrl.blog/southern-conference-league-team-guide/

"Founded in September 2015, South London Silverbacks brought Rugby League back to the London Borough of Bromley playing their first competitive fixture in 2017 following 18 months of careful planning.

The Silverbacks are one of the newest teams who will compete in the Southern Conference League, but they will be hoping this serves them well and they can take the revamped league by storm".
