Eight nations will again compete in the European Under-19 Championship in 2020, with Italy hosting the event for the first time.  The coastal town of north-east, Lignano Sabbiadoro, will be the base of the biennial to be held from 3 to 13 September 2020.

The defending champions (France), who won the last tournament in Serbia, are among the favorites with England, finalist of a hotly contested final in 2018. The seven nations ranked among the best in the last tournament - including also  Wales and Scotland, Serbia, Ireland and Italy - will automatically qualify for the 2020 tournament, if they wish to participate.

Ukraine, who finished eighth, will likely go through qualifying matches, with other nations having expressed the wish to be included.

"On behalf of the board of directors of the Federazione Italia Rugby League, I would like to express our sincere gratitude and thanks to the RLEF for having awarded the tournament to Italy", said the president of the FIRL, Orazio D'arro  .  "We see the European Under-19 Championship as an event and an essential and fundamental building block that contributes to the development of sport in the region.  We are really honored to have the chance to organize this competition.  "

All nations will stay at Bella Italia Sports Village, which can accommodate 2,800 people in 13 hotels.  At least eight of the games will be held at Stadio Communale G. Teghil, a complex with a stadium for 5,000 people in Lignano.

Chris Thair, Managing Director of RLEF, said: "FIRL has prepared a compelling offer as part of our bidding process and will be hosting a fantastic tournament.  To commemorate this working relationship and help gain experience with our staff, the RLEF will lead - for the first time - joint tournament directors, including Tiziano Franchini, from FIRL.  Our goal is to ensure that the young people involved have a great sporting experience regardless of the results achieved.  "

Was there in Belgrade last year.  Hopefully the momentum for this event continues and we see it for many years to come.

Wonder what other nations would be interested in attending for the Ukraine to have to go through qualifying ?

I think that's a really good decision.  Postponing was a no-brainer, but making it an U20 instead of U19 for next year only, then returning to being U19 in 2022 is great and ensures no player that in line to play, will miss out as a result of postponing.

Likelihood of this tournament happening in 2021 ?

You mentioned that you were in Belgrade for the tournament in 2019. How was it, did it get much publicity, how were the crowds and the standard of play ? Thanks.

I think most games are on youtube if you want to see the standard.

Was an enjoyable event. Had its hiccups but for a developing nation I thought they did well in organisation. Was bloody hot !

Publicity wise i believe the local media got behind it as did Balkan Rugby League TV run by an English guy i met.

Day 1 crowds very good as was a Saturday or Sunday from memory. Dropped a bit mid week.

Standard of play fairly good. Plenty of vision on You Tube to judge for yourself. Lot of newbies to the sport in the developing countries.

Thanks mate, must be great living in a part of the world where you can book a room for a week in some new place, watch some League and do a bit of sight seeing as well. Sounds like heaven to me.

Not sure if wires crossed or misunderstood but I was only visiting Europe and built the tournament into my itinerary.. In fact it was my first port of call.

I'm a Brisvegas resident here in Oz.

Met up and socialised with plenty of supporters from all parts of Europe. Ex referee so took a particular interest in the officials for the tournament. Came from a lot of different countries.

Hopefully get to another youth oriented comp.

Reported on the tournament via the sports writing website The Footy Almanac if interested in a look.

Article from February 2022 has the below quote.

Rugby League World Cup 2021 will be a major focus for a lot of members but there will be plenty of other activity throughout the year, “ERL stages a biennial U19s European Youth Championships which had to be postponed in 2020 and could not be rescheduled in 2021, so we will be making some announcements about that over the next few months.

Anyone aware of any announcements that have been made since February ?

I couldn't find something confirming where it was but the French appear to be preparing for the tournament to be held between September 1-11 this year.

England have also announced their train on squad so it appears to be going ahead but again I can't find anything confirming a location.

Since this announcement, IRL announced it is looking at holding an U19 competition at RLWC2025. So my guess is, they are trying to co-ordinate with them, and find a format that ties in with WC qualifying.

But still, it is May, so you could argue their "next few months" comment has not yet reach it's expiry date.

I don't know a word of French so I'll have to take the translation at face value but France appear to be making taking their junior national sides very seriously as part of their strategy moving forward which is good to see.

Statement indicates they have a couple of key objectives with respect to the u19s team, notably these include identifying individuals within the current group that can mentor future u19s leading into France 2025 and even beginning to identify and train potential squad members for the 2025 U19 WC within their U15-17s teams right now. Exciting to see the sort of long-term commitments to development that are being made on the back of these junior international tournaments.

Hopefully other countries can implement similar strategies to drive the standard of these competitions further.

Draw and fixtures released:

https://europeanrugbyleague.com/articles/2175/european-u19s-championship-format-confir

Interesting format with Scotland's withdrawal - a round-robin 6 x 20-minute games for each team over the course of a single day to make up the first round.

What they describe as being 'an innovative format' is actually nothing more than sticking plaster put over a scar left by the embarrassment of Scotland's unacceptable withdrawal.

This is no criticism of those who made themselves available (who must be gutted) or, indeed, of those working to establish RL north of the border.
