Danny Baker fired (again)

Recommended Posts

How does he keep getting work after repeatedly getting fired for saying or doing something stupid?

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-48212693

If he's claiming ignorance here then he's on thin ice - he is a football (Millwall) fan and is fully aware of the issues around racism and black footballers being subject to monkey chants.

There's been some pretty disgusting stuff online about the baby too.

"I am the avenging angel; I come with wings unfurled, I come with claws extended from halfway round the world. I am the God Almighty, I am the howling wind. I care not for your family; I care not for your kin. I come in search of terror, though terror is my own; I come in search of vengeance for crimes and crimes unknown. I care not for your children, I care not for your wives, I care not for your country, I care not for your lives." - (c) Jim Boyes - "The Avenging Angel"

I suspect he thought he could get away with it because of context - he's tweeted similar, but not the same as far as I'm aware, before about all manner of people. So probably in his bubble he thought that would mean no-one would think it racist.

I don't think he is racist by the way. But he has been very dumb. And, whether you think he's a good broadcaster or not (I think he is), it's a shame because his programme will now almost certainly be replaced by an identikit Five Live show.

Yeah, he's good. Which is why he gets work. I do think that tweeting/re-tweeting too much and too quickly means the likelihood of something escaping any personal filtering process increases.

I don't think he's even remotely racist, in spite of being a Millwall fan. I don't think he even thought about "getting away with it." It just never crossed his mind that it might be seen that way.

I'll have to admit to a personal prejudice, clever and funny as he is, I just can't listen to him. His accent just grates on me.

His apology was pretty pathetic though. Sounded to me like he was playing the victim.

He will already have signed a contract with LBC or Talk Radio in London by now, as usual, for the next six months, until it is forgotten about, then he will be back on the BBC by Christmas.

I hope not.

On the plus side it will mean there's another programme worth listening to on LBC

I've seen the offending Tweet, and had a (very) quick look at the ensuing social media hysteria. Suggesting he's a racist is a long shot. Being fired by the corporation that eagerly invites Farage onto 'Question Time' again and again? Hmm.

Maybe, at 61 years old, he'll decide to head off to Florida and put his feet up like he often says he intends to - he can do his main job of writing for other people from anywhere. To be honest, broadcasting's only two hours of his week (plus the podcast he started doing last year).

Unfortunately he was trying to be too clever with his non-apology.

Sometimes you just need to offer an unreserved apology, even if it is just for being a bit dumb/careless.

I think the furore is reasonable, posting a pic of a monkey to represent the new baby is controversial, whether he meant it or not.

He should have apologised.

Danny Baker is a very intelligent man. He knew full well what what he was doing imho.

I don’t listen to him but when I do see him on tv he does come across a bit smug and over clever .

His various ‘apologies’ were worse than the pic.  He played the victim and made it look more likely that he knew what he was doing.

With the best, thats a good bit of PR, though I would say the Bedford team, theres, like, you know, 13 blokes who can get together at the weekend to have a game together, which doesnt point to expansion of the game. Point, yeah go on!

From what I heard it was all pretty incoherent , really rapid fire waffle .

One of his now deleted tweets was along the lines of ‘I don’t have a deseased mind so didn’t see the racial links’.

I don't think he's a racist, but wtf was he thinking of? Did he think it couldn't/wouldn,t be construed as racist?

Interesting to see if this also puts the kibosh on the Lineker & Baker Behind closed Doors podcast. I imagine the former will be considering his "Mr Clean" image.

The sheer hostility towards Baker on the media is overwhelming yet not a single comment that the BBC tolerates genuinely vile racists on a daily basis.

ITV news was just on in the background now and you’d think he was Jimmy Saville going by the hostility towards him.

Not sure the whataboutism helps.

I will give him the benefit of the doubt that he didn't see the link as he posted it.

But he then went down the 'I don't see colour so the real racists are the ones complaining' route.

I get your point about whataboutism but the BBC have set a bar with this. I also get fed up with kiddie gloves treatments of genuine racists.

Well, quite.

I'm really not quite sure about the proportionality here. Baker hosted one two-hour show a week on the BBC. And that's the sum total of his broadcasting these days. Are there going to be protests outside theatres next? Because that seems a little ... extreme? Especially for someone who, as far as I can tell, doesn't appear to have done anything else remotely racist in his career.

I certainly don't think he meant to be racist and I imagine it was just meant to be poking fun at the Royals. I doubt the possibility of it being construed as racist had even crossed his mind. Of course in this day and age some are offended about everything and have to look for offence and ulterior motives in everything.
