I suspect he thought he could get away with it because of context - he's tweeted similar, but not the same as far as I'm aware, before about all manner of people. So probably in his bubble he thought that would mean no-one would think it racist. I don't think he is racist by the way. But he has been very dumb. And, whether you think he's a good broadcaster or not (I think he is), it's a shame because his programme will now almost certainly be replaced by an identikit Five Live show. Which is why he gets work. I do think that tweeting/re-tweeting too much and too quickly means the likelihood of something escaping any personal filtering process increases. It just never crossed his mind that it might be seen that way. I'll have to admit to a personal prejudice, clever and funny as he is, I just can't listen to him. His accent just grates on me. Being fired by the corporation that eagerly invites Farage onto 'Question Time' again and again? Hmm. Maybe, at 61 years old, he'll decide to head off to Florida and put his feet up like he often says he intends to - he can do his main job of writing for other people from anywhere. To be honest, broadcasting's only two hours of his week (plus the podcast he started doing last year). I think the furore is reasonable, posting a pic of a monkey to represent the new baby is controversial, whether he meant it or not. He should have apologised. With the best, thats a good bit of PR, though I would say the Bedford team, theres, like, you know, 13 blokes who can get together at the weekend to have a game together, which doesnt point to expansion of the game. ITV news was just on in the background now and you’d think he was Jimmy Saville going by the hostility towards him. Baker hosted one two-hour show a week on the BBC. And that's the sum total of his broadcasting these days. Are there going to be protests outside theatres next? Because that seems a little ... extreme? Especially for someone who, as far as I can tell, doesn't appear to have done anything else remotely racist in his career. I doubt the possibility of it being construed as racist had even crossed his mind.
