Sounding like an old fart, but, I really don’t get the Citrus bitters that seem to be coming to the fore. My tastebuds prefer a ruby type bitter, but they are becoming the minority.

There is a lovely beer from a Shropshire brewery, Joules. Only makes it as far north as Chester, so on the occasions that I find myself there, a trip to the Cross Keys is a must.

I'm with you on the citrus stuff, but the choice available today is so broad, I don't begrudge their existence. I suppose it suits those who really want a shandy but think that ordering one is less than manly.

Start-up microbreweries, on the other hand, shew a marked lack of imagination, as all they seem to launch is an endless wave of IPAs. The market for that ale is as saturated as the white wine market is overloaded with acidic Sauvignon blanc.

He drinks in the wrong places. I have a few pints of mild fairly regularly, although I have started to alternate what I'm drinking of late.

It was CAMRA Mild month in May. There were many milds available in London. Mild was never a southern drink and the first 20 or so years I lived in London there was none but recently they have become available on a more regular basis. When I was growing up in Salford in the 60s there were milds from Chesters,Wilsons,Tetleys,Greenalls,Boddingtons,Hydes and Holts. (The first four were horrible for my taste).

Never had anything prefixed by "Watney's" that wasn't absolutely vile.

Watneys Stag bitter was a good drink. We used to always look for it on trips to London for the Challenge Cup final.

You're right - the pub at Lancaster by the river Lune is the Waggon and Horses. Lots of the riverside sheds and warehouses have been knocked down recently in that area for housing

Wow!! The Waggon and Horses on the Lune in Lancaster. I d forgotten that place. We used to go in there before Lancashire county RU games at Vale of Lune.

I live within an easy distance of Siren's Taproom and a friends wife worked there on their last open day but I am not a big fan of their beers (other equally good and cheaper alternatives), equally locally Sherfield village brewery does a Chestnut Stout which to me tastes identical to a Boots homebrew kit stout.

I quite like a citrus type beer (as long as grapefruit not lemon as that reminds me of washing up liquid) but I grew up on King & Barnes in Sussex which was a very bitter bitter and then in Reading we had Brakspears form Henley which was another very Bitter bitter so I mush prefer that style over more floral brews - to me the old style Flowers IPA used to remind me of Palma Violets (yukkk)

No wonder we haven't heard from you it's nearly the longest day! I hope you don't live in Scotland!

Fitting all your drinking between what's left must mean it feels like pub opening hours have made a comeback at yours.

Be careful what you wish for, Clogiron; this was Lerwick Harbour at 2.40am this morning!

I have been tasting bottled beers from M&S, and they get around their need to be mostly "own brand" on the shelves by getting their beers from named breweries, but also making the provenance clear on the front labels.

Thus, I know that their Yorkshire Gold is from Black Sheep in Masham, their Cornish Red is from the St Austell Brewery and this rather decent oatmeal stout I am currently sipping is from the Ilkley Brewery.

It's this one. Food is excellent, especially the pies. Couldn't want somewhere better to spend two minutes walking to.

Was in there last night for food, the haddock and chips is great and as you say the pies are something else. I need to pick you up though, you missed Golden Best off your list of beers available

Too many Taylor's beers there for my liking. I find some of them a bit sweet. Decent nosebag though.

I’ve had that Boltmaker in a bottle from a local Sainsbury’s I think, but I didn’t think too much of it.

Undoubtedly though, it will taste MUCH BETTER on tap as Landlord in a bottle tastes of nothing either.

The main freehouses I’ve had Landlord were around the Hebden Bridge area although also you get it in places like the Strawbury Duck on the outskirts of Bolton.

I remember going to the Duck in 1990 when I first met the missus, had a few pints of 'Dark Assasin', dont remember much after that.

Was in Shipley and Saltaire last weekend, and naturally, the pubs had Saltaire Blonde on tap. A good pint that one on a warm day. Probably not best bitter category really though
