Why isn’t the Northern Hemisphere playing International matches this week?

Recommended Posts

Simple question

The Pacific nations are playing this weekend and will all play again later this year as part of the Oceanic Cup.

When do the Northern Hemisphere nations play, and just how far behind are they going to be at the 2021 RLWC?

Because the chairmen of a number of SL clubs think we should be having 3 iterations of for example Leeds vs Castleford instead...

Because playing the same old teams over and over and over again on dark, rainy Thursday nights while the fans want to take their own lives in the league in front of 7,000 people (if you're lucky) behind a pay wall is considered more important than England playing a couple of decent tests on both sides of the channel in front of at least 20,000 people on national free to air TV.

What about Lebanon?!

Short answer is France still aren’t good enough. And the costs, of course.

Lebanon are playing down under this weekend.

So how do we help the French become good enough considering it’s in our own interests to do so? We criticise the NRL yet our own authorities are far worse.

I'll give the real reason...

The NRL spat their dummy out over the Denver test last year so decided to punish the RFL by taking away the possibility of playing NZ mid season and arranged (and funded) NZ v Tonga which left England without a worth while opponent...so England haven't bothered and the RFL/ESL didn't even bother too arrange a free weekend for anyone to play tests...

It's a cock up all round...plus last year the Celtic nations didn't arrange anything cos they genuinely thought the RLIF was going to arrange games for them...and by the time they where told,by me,that it's their own job to arrange mid season games it was to late to do anything....

Some of us have been campaigning for a world wide mid season test weekend for a decade...and when we finally get one they drop the effing ball...

France vs a Super League based England team I think would make for a good match this weekend. plus would be good to see what our depth was like.. if you go to the NRL you are unable to play for England mid season which i dont see as a major punishment but also a good incentive to stay if you are only going to be a bit part player.

Of course..... to promote the GB tour we should have had England v a Celtic select side....but that's too obvious

what you mean like something that could be considered a "trial match"... nah it'll never catch on!

If we did arrange matches would the NRL allow players to travel to play in them? I think we all know the answer to that.

We don't need the English NRL players to play the European teams

Leigh Sports Village is fully booked with weddings over the summer, so Internationals are not an option.

We also don't have any England kits to play in, as they are having a GB lion sewn on over the current England badge.

Do what to the GB tour?

Promote it?

The RLIF have a 10 year plan for Test in the Pacific

https://www.nrl.com/news/2019/06/19/pacific-nations-to-host-future-tests-in-new-10-year-rolling-calendar/

"Tonga, Samoa, Fiji and Papua New Guinea are set to host future Oceania Cup matches as part of a rolling 10-year international calendar, while the tournament is likely to move to Australia next season.

RLIF CEO Nigel Wood confirmed on the eve of Saturday’s opening round of Oceania Cup matches between New Zealand and Tonga at Mt Smart Stadium and Samoa and Papua New Guinea at Leichhardt Oval that the international body wanted to play games in the Pacific islands."
...
It is expected that end-of-season matches in next year’s tournament will shift to Australia and possibly Papua New Guinea, which hosted 2017 World Cup fixtures, although Wood pointed out the Kangaroos will be touring Britain and won’t play in the 2020 Oceania Cup.
...
Wood said the details were now being worked on and an announcement would be made later in the year.

Much more at the article, including:

  • NRL Trial match to be announced for preseason as part of Australian government engagement in Pacific region;
  • 10 year calendar agreed to at recent Singapore meeting
  • Cook Islands likely to join Pool B for 2020 Oceanic Cup
  • RLIF want to have 8 teams capable of winning the 2021 RLWC

If we want to put out the best available teams we do.

we need competitive matches.. not having them makes it more competitive. it also allows us to see the strength in depth of the england team.. I also dont see it being a massive issue selling the international without them either to be honest.. we see precious little international RL so anyone seriously having an issue needs to have a think on.. its how you rebuild the international scene in Europe and its International matches.. a few years and stronger "other nations" and then bring them back to play.

I know that. However of we are talking about low level internationals then that is a completely different kettle of fish than what is happening with the Pacific Nations.

You get stronger nations by having more eligible players playing at the top level. This is what the Pacific Islands have shown. Playing more international matches with Championship and League 1 players does little to make a nation more competitive for the top level. These matches should undoubtedly happen between each other, Wales, Scotland and Ireland, but it's of little benefit to a nation like England to be playing these countries. There is absolutely no reason for England not to be playing France though, that is unforgivable.
